Tam boys roll past San Rafael to remain in first

Schuyler Hoebericht­s had three goals and two assists as the Tam High boys soccer team rolled to a 5-1 victory against San Rafael on Saturday night.

Griffin Gustafson and Jasper Kunz also scored as the Red-tailed Hawks (9-15) remained in a tie for first place in the MCAL standings with 32 points.

Trevor Islam and Kunz also had assists for Tam. Jeffrey Grijalva scored in the 64th minute for the Bulldogs (9-3-2) who dropped into fourth place with the result.

• Owen Benson scored twice to lift Archie Williams to a crucial 3-0 win against Novato. Anton Della Valle had the other goal for the Peregrine Falcons, who pulled within one point of San Rafael for fourth place. Both Archie Williams and San Rafael have tough games coming up on Tuesday, against Redwood and Terra Linda, respective­ly.

• Liam Hadden had an unassisted goal in the first half as Terra Linda surged into third place on 31 points following a 1-0 win against San Marin.

• Sam Gersch, Matt Jessen and Keaton Fargo scored goals for Redwood in a 3-0 win against Branson. Jessen, Jack Middleton and Dave Mazariegos had assists for the Giants (102-2), who are tied for first with Tam but have a game in hand.

Girls soccer

Sydney Boyd scored twice and had an assist to help Tam momentaril­y move to the top of the table following a 5-1 win against San Rafael. Yuna McCormack, Maren Jones and Addie Covey also scored goals for the Red-tailed Hawks (10-1-3), who moved ahead of Branson for first place on 33 points. Tam has two games left to play while Branson had three and controls its destiny for the regular-season title. Stella Espinasse and Annalie Kamperin both had two assists for Tam. Mia Safanda scored the goal for San Rafael (2-11-1).

• Sadie Reiter provided the breakthrou­gh goal for Terra Linda in the 61st minute to secure a 1-0 win against San Marin on Saturday. Madeline Reyes pressured the San Marin goalie, who cleared the ball out toward Reiter outside the 18-yard box. Reiter put her shot into the corner for the game winner. TL coach Dylan Arroyo credited Kaya Lash and Chippy Taylor for helping to control the game. TL remains five points back of Archie Williams for the final playoff spot with just two games remaining.

• Maya Wells netted a hat trick and assisted on the opening goal to lift Archie Williams to an 8-0 win against Novato. Ellie Casey scored the opener then Harley DeBok, Dira De Andrade, Kayla Franks and Charlotte Block also had goals. The win allowed the Peregrine Falcons (74-3) to move ahead of idle Marin Catholic (6-4-4) for the fourth and final playoff spot with two games left to play. MC plays Novato on Monday while Archie Williams faces Redwood. The two teams wrap up the regular season against each other at MC on Wednesday in what likely will amount to a playoff game.

Girls basketball

Ellen Deisz hit six of Redwood’s 16 3-pointers to help lead the Giants to a 64-36 victory over San Rafael on Saturday. Deisz finished with a team-high 18 points for the Giants (9-13, 6-6), who also got 14 points — including four 3-pointers — from Anaru Todd. Riley Cottrell led the Bulldogs (9-14, 3-11) with 16 points.

• Margaret Young scored a game-high 15 points and Bea Mancini added 10 as Archie Williams pulled away for a 51-29 victory against shorthande­d Branson. Hannah Golan led Branson with nine points while Avery Myerberg had eight.

• Gracyn Lovette poured in 19 points as Marin Catholic stayed perfect in league following a 63-31 win against Terra Linda. Anna Schraeder had eight points and Madie Dayton added seven.

• Tam completed the sweep of back-to-back games in two nights against Redwood with Friday night’s 41-36 victory. Olivia Soenens led the Red-tailed Hawks (8-4, 5-3 MCAL) with 14 points. The Giants’ tough defense and Anaru Todd’s 15-point effort helped keep the game close in the second half, but the Red-tailed Hawks held on down the stretch for the key win.

College baseball

Skylar Lenihan and Joey Taddie homered to lift College of Marin to its first victory of the young season, a 7-5 home affair against Diablo Valley on Saturday.

Taddie’s three-run homer, his second in two days, briefly tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third inning. It took Lenihan’s two-run blast in the fifth inning to give the Mariners their first lead of the game, 5-4. Donovan Ratfield scored on a fielder’s choice, and Jacob Campbell singled to drive in Jack Morken in the sixth inning to sew up the win for the Mariners (1-2).

Women’s basketball

Dominican University is riding a two-game win streak heading into Sunday’s rematch with Holy Names University (0-15, 0-7) on the road. Maiya Flores scored 30 points as the Penguins hung up a 114-40 home victory over Holy Names on Wednesday, Jan. 26. Dominican followed that with Friday’s 9382 victory over Fresno Pacific as Riley Friauf scored 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds.
