Novato baseball's Rabb, Liuzzu silence Hayward

Jacob Rabb and Dari Liuzzu combined for the shutout as the Novato High baseball team defeated non-league foe Hayward, 5-0, on Saturday.

Rabb got the start for the Hornets and went six innings to hold Hayward to just two hits as he struck out six batters. Liuzzi took the mound in the seventh, as he struck out Jeremiah Caldwell to finish off the game.

Evan Black and Will Carlson each had two hits for the Hornets, who finished with seven hits on the day.

Softball

Dominican University packed an offensive punch to sweep a doublehead­er with conference foe Holy Names on Saturday.

The Penguins did all their scoring with a fifthinnin­g rally in a 3-2 victory in the early game. Faith Erb scored on a sacrifice fly and Melissa Garcia scored on an error in the fifth inning to tie the game, 2-2. Lauren Lapinid scored the winning run as she beat the throw home on a sacrifice fly to right field.

Dominican starter Shelby Keltner struck out nine and walked one, while scattering five hits in a complete-game win.

In the second game, Dominican used a five-run outburst in the fourth inning to take command in a 6-2 victory. Trailing 2-1 with the bases loaded, Keltner doubled through the left side to drive home three runs. The Penguins scored one more run in the inning for a 5-2 lead, then added another run in the sixth to complete the scoring.

Garcia was 2-for-4 and Lapinid was 3-for-4 for the Penguins, who tallied 10 hits.

Reliever Rosa Liguria pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings for the win.

Women's tennis

Dominican University earned wins in the top five singles matches to sew up a 6-1 victory over UC Santa Cruz on Saturday.

Audrey Rafols anchored the Penguins with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles. Haley Garcia, Zoe Coggins, Gina Dudley and Julia Rydel also won their singles matches for Dominican.

The Penguins won two of three doubles matches to wrap up the day. Rafols and Dudley teamed up at No. 1 doubles for a 6-1 victory and Coggins and Rydel earned a 6-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.
