Marte called up to big leagues
Giants need help with Rogers headed to paternity list
With one reliever already on the bereavement list and another heading to the paternity leave, the Giants bolstered their bullpen Tuesday by promoting 27-year-old right-hander Yunior Marte to their active roster.
Marte's winter ball team in the Dominican Republic, Toros del Este, posted on social media congratulating him on the call-up on Tuesday morning and the Giants eventually made the transaction official four hours before their matchup with the Padres at Oracle Park.
Marte takes the spot of Monday's losing pitcher, Tyler Rogers, whose wife is due with their first child, while John Brebbia will spend one more day on the bereavement list.
Marte could become the second member of the organization to make his MLB debut in the last week, joining 22-year-old outfielder Heliot Ramos who recorded his first two big league hits in the Giants' victory over the Miami Marlins on Sunday.
Marte, a native of the Dominican Republic, signed with the Kansas City Royals as an international free agent in 2012 and spent the first eight years of his professional career with the organization before signing a minor-league deal with San Francisco before last season. Marte, who has a fastball that consistently touches 98 mph, has primarily acted as a reliever since 2018, posting a 3.49 ERA in 238 appearances and 546.0 innings over his minor-league career.
Dating back to last season, Marte has allowed only three runs over his last 16 appearances at Triple-A, with a 25:2 K:BB ratio over that span. He had yet to give up a run or a walk, while striking out six batters, in three appearances this season, including a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save on Opening Day.
The Giants added him to the 40-man roster after last season, when he made 43 appearances with a 3.43 ERA for the River Cats.
