Top two tennis seeds set up for finals clash
Marin Catholic's Nickawn Namdar and Archie Williams' Jake Magnusson took care of business in the MCAL tennis semifinals on Tuesday, setting up a final between the top two seeds on Wednesday.
Namdar, the top seed, dropped the first set to Redwood's Liam Carpenter before rallying for an 0-6, 6-3, 10-8 victory. Magnusson, the No. 2 seed, took care of Tam's Carson Harrell, 6-2, 6-1.
The top seeds did not fare as well in the doubles draw. Branson's Tommy Higgins and Leighton Frasier advanced to the final as the No. 3 seed and will face the unseeded team of Jackson Bramlette and Charlie Boyden from Redwood.
Boyden and Bramlette, the Nos. 2 and 3 players on Redwood's strength ladder, respectively took care of the No. 1 seed and the No. 4 seed en route to the final.
Boys lacrosse
Third-seeded Tam rolled to a 15-3 victory against The Bay School in the first round of the North Coast Section Division II playoffs on Tuesday. The Hawks host a Thursday quarterfinal against the winner of the late game between No. 6 Acalanes and No. 11 University.
No. 8 Branson got defensive while dispatching of No. 9 Northgate, 8-1, in D-II on Tuesday. The Bulls face a tougher task in Thursday's quarterfinals against top-seeded Justin-Siena.
In Division I, No. 2 Redwood and No. 5 Marin Catholic rolled to firstround victories. Jake Vasquez had two goals and four assists for Redwood while Willy Baker had three goals and two assists. Max Malone was 19 of 23 on faceoffs.
The Giants host No. 10 San Ramon Valley on Thursday after the Wolves took down No. 7 Marin Academy on Tuesday. MC plays the winner of the late game between No. 4 Vista del Lago and No. 13 Piedmont.
Girls lacrosse
Top-seeded Redwood took another step toward postseason glory with a 16-3 win over No. 16 Granada in the D-I playoffs. The Giants host No. 9 California at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
MC also advanced after a 17-10 victory against No. 10 St. Francis. The No. 7 Wildcats face the winner between No. 2 San Ramon Valley or No. 15 Dougherty Valley.
In D-II, San Marin scored early and often in a 23-4 home win against Christian Brothers. The No. 5 Mustangs will either travel to No. 4 Justin-Siena or host No. 13 Lick-Wilmerding on Thursday.
No. 2 Marin Academy and No. 3 Tam remained on a collision course in the semifinals following comfortable wins in the first round.
