Vote yes on Measure A to connect youth to nature

-

Since the start of the pandemic, mental health issues have significantly increased. As a mental health clinician and a community advocate for improving self regulation and coping skills in youth, I am asking you to vote yes on Measure A to extend the tax for parks, open space and agriculture in the June 7 election.

A couple of years ago, Opening the World, the nonprofit organization I founded, was the recipient of Measure A funding. Throughout our partnership, OTW provided opportunities for youth to appreciate our local parks and their natural beauty through photography classes. Many of the youth we serve had never experienced Marin parks before.

Through the direction of local artist and photographer Marianne Owens, OTW youths became observers and photographers of nature. They learned a creative and tangible skill that they can apply throughout their lifetime. Most importantly, this funding gave local underprivileged youth experiences to be present, reap the benefits of a calm environment and be in awe of the surrounding area.

As one participant stated, ”I never knew this park was here, or that it was free to use.”

It is an understatement to emphasize how important it is for all people to enjoy our surroundings. They help us find meaning, peace, purpose and connection. They give us moments to slow down. These experiences are needed now more than ever, especially for those who have struggled significantly through a turbulent time in their developmental years.

Please vote yes on Measure A to ensure our youth have places and spaces to be in nature and take care of their mental health and well-being.
