No. 1 Marin Catholic moves on to quarters

Brad Burnes continued his postseason heroics, hitting a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lift top-seeded Marin Catholic to a 5-2 victory against Washington in the first round of the North Coast Section Division II playoffs Wednesday.

Burnes’ blast put MC (21-3) ahead 5-1. Kody Perry pitched a complete game, allowing four hits, one earned run and striking out 10.

Maddox Thompson put the Wildcats in front with an RBI groundout in the second inning. MC added two more runs in the fourth on a passed ball and an error.

MC was limited to four hits with Jayden Lee, Jake Galetti and Alex Saavedra getting the others. MC hosts No. 9 Ukiah at 1 p.m. Saturday in the quarterfin­als.

• Kaiden Dossa delivered the game-winning hit and pitched two scoreless innings to close the game out as Tam secured a 2-1 win against No. 11 Rancho Cotate in the D-II playoffs. The No. 6 Red-tailed Hawks (187) hit the road to face No. 3 Petaluma in the quarterfin­als at 1 p.m. Saturday. Jake Moore had the game-tying RBI for Tam.

• Redwood got 5.1 innings plus an RBI triple from starting pitcher Rex Solle in a 2-1 win against Maria Carrillo in the D-II playoffs. The No. 7 Giants move on to host No. 15 El Cerrito at 1 p.m. Saturday. The full game story can be found online and in Friday’s print edition.

Prep softball

Kelsey McNair had a five-RBI day and San Rafael scored 14 runs in the second inning to put things out of reach early in a 16-1 victory against Campolindo.

McNair hit a home run and scored two runs for the No. 3 Bulldogs (21-5), who advance to a quarterfin­al matchup against Archie Williams.

Riley Cottrell and Emma Maloney led the hit parade with three apiece. Thomara Drummer and Angel Amesa had two hits each. Sophia Everett had a hit, drove in two runs and scored three times.

Drummer pitched two perfect innings then made way for Megan Murphy and McNair.

College baseball

Kentfield’s Alec Ritch, a former Branson School standout, was named the New England Small Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the year. Ritch led the conference in RBIs (50), and steals (40) while ranking second in runs scored (47).

Ritch’s steals total set a new single-season mark for the program. Ritch was second in the conference in walks (29) and seventh in hits (50). Ritch batted .360 with 12 doubles, five triples and nine home runs.

Swimming

The Lucas Valley Lightning, Sleepy Hollow Sea Lions, Strawberry Seals, Marinwood Waterdevil­s and Scott Valley Sea Serpents all picked up victories as the third week of Marin Swim League competitio­n wrapped up on Saturday.

Riggins Scheumann of the Seals was one of many triple winners on the day, breaking his own team records in the 11-12 year olds 50 fly (27.36 seconds) and 50 breast (32.01). He also set pool records in both events, breaking marks set by Tam High standout Marre Gattnar and former Terra Linda High standout Jonah Albers, respective­ly.

Current Tam High freshman Addison Everage also won three events for Strawberry and set a pool record in the girls 1518 100 individual medley (1:03.34), formerly held by TL’s Nicolette Jasko.

Lucas Valley got triple wins from Mika Schafer, Hannah Shoup, Nathaniel Evans, Haley brown and David Finney to beat Swimarin 301-236. Sleepy Hollow got three wins from Hailey Bennett and Zayne Wachelka in a 387155 win against Novato.

Other Strawberry Seals to win three events were Jack Redemann, Rory Murphy, Eona Pasternak and Nichols Arinduque in a 401-155 victory against Terra Linda. Marinwood’s standout were Olivia Mann, Patrick Nixon, Mia Kaster, Connor Nixon, Evelyn Noyes, Davis Golden, Josephine Fetterman-Riggle, Cayden Yock, Rosie Lucchesi and Jackson Conway as it defeated Rolling Hills, 425-111.

Scott Valley got three wins from Kaia Calabria Kent to beat Tidalwaves, 291-261.
