The beauty of climbing roses

- — KATIE MARTIN, UC MARIN MASTER GARDENER

Climbing roses can be great for growing on a trellis or archway. They may also be used to screen ugly fences or outbuildings.

Climbing roses are divided into two categories: natural climbers and those that are climbing sports of bush roses.

My favorite is the pink climber Cecile Brunner. Climber Cecile Brunner was developed from the polyantha shrub rose. Cecile Brunner was the name of the Swiss rosarian Ulrich Brunner's daughter. The shrub rose was developed in France in 1881.

The small, pale pink blooms are fragrant and grow from springtime to fall. Cecile Brunner requires full sun and moderate water. It is rated 8.3 by the All-America Rose Selections.
