Nine city council races set in Marin

More than a dozen school contests for seats as candidate filing closes

A number of Marin County candidates took advantage of the extended filing period for the Nov. 8 election that ended Wednesday to throw their hats in the ring.

Nine of Marin's 11 municipali­ties have incumbents whose terms are ending, and all nine will have competitiv­e races in November. Several municipal council candidates filed during the extended filing period.

In Fairfax, Holly Baade and Lisel Blash filed during the extended period, joining medical marijuana pioneer Lynnette Shaw, Cindy Swift and incumbent Stephanie Hellman in the contest for two seats on the Town Council.

In Novato, a second candidate, Nicole Gardner, has filed to compete with Chris Carpiniell­o and longtime incumbent Pat Eklund for that city's District 4 seat on the City Council. Rachel Farac and Andy Podshadley will compete for the District 2 seat. Only appointed incumbent Mark Milberg filed for the city's District 5 seat.

In San Rafael, Gerrod Herndon is challengin­g incumbent Eli Hill for his District 2 seat on the City Council. Incumbent Maribeth

Bushey, who is seeking reelection to her District 3 seat, is being challenged by political activist Jonathan Frieman.

In Sausalito, Joan Cox, Jeffrey Chase, Timothy McCloud and incumbent Jill Hoffman will vie for two openings on the City Council.

In San Anselmo, Guy Meyer, Tarrell Kullaway and incumbents Ford Greene and Steve Burro will

compete for two openings on the Town Council.

In Corte Madera, Pat Ravasio, Rosa Thomas, Robert Lucarini, James Andrews and incumbent Eli Beckman will compete for three seats on the Town Council.

In Larkspur, Kevin Carroll, Jay Holland and incumbents Catherine Way and Kevin Haroff will compete for three seats on the City Council.

In Tiburon, Isaac Nikfar and incumbents Alice Fredericks, Jon Welner and Jack Ryan will vie for three seats on the Town Council.

In Belvedere, four candidates — Brian Davis, Jane Cooper, Richard Snyder and appointed incumbent Peter Mark — will compete for two four-year seats on the City Council. Sally Wilkinson and Carolyn Lund will complete for one seat with a two-year term.

There will also be competitiv­e races for three seats on the Marin Municipal Water District board. Shana Katzman filed during the extended filling period to vie with Jed Smith for the Division 4 seat. Jack Kenney and Ranjiv Khush will compete with Larry Bragman for his Division 3 seat. Matthew Samson is challengin­g Jack Gibson for his Division 1 seat.

No one filed to challenge the two North Marin Water District incumbents whose terms are ending: Richard Fraites, who represents Division 5, and James Grossi, who represents Division 1.

Only one candidate, incumbent Lawrence Baskin, filed to run for the two openings on the Stinson Beach County Water board.

At the Marin Healthcare District, the terms of three board members — Jennifer Rienks, Larry Bedard and Brian Su — expire at the end of this year. The district recently switched to zoned elections.

Su was the only candidate who filed to run for the new Division 3 seat. Rienks was the only person to file for the Division 4 seat. Samantha Ramirez was the only candidate to file for the Division 1 seat.

No one filed to challenge Marilyn Nemzer, the Area 5 trustee on the Marin County Board of Education, or Greg Knell, the Area 3 trustee. Li Delpan and Philip Wyatt will compete for a short-term Area 1 seat.

All three of the Marin Community College District board members whose terms are ending — Suzanne Brown Crow, Wanden Treanor and Diana Conti — filed to run and had no challenger­s.

There will be more than a dozen local school board races on the Nov. 8 ballot.

Lisa Longnecker is challengin­g appointed incumbent Lucia Martel-Dow for her Area 2 seat on the San Rafael school board. In San Rafael's Area 4, incumbent Carolina Martin faces a challenge from Faye Bourret.

Six candidates — Damian Morgan, Emily Uhlhorn, Barbara McVeigh, Renee Marcelle, and incumbents Kevin Saavedra and Cynthia Roenisch — will compete for three seats on the Tamalpais Union High School District board.

Four candidates — Doug Lee, Jacob Tonski and incumbents Nathan Siedman and Arianne Dar — will vie for three seats on the Bolinas-Stinson Union School District board.

Three incumbents — Brad Honsberger, Brooks Nguyen and Megan Hutchinson — filed for seats on the Miller Creek Elementary School District board, which has three available seats.

Silver McDonald and Benny Joseph filed for the Kentfield School District board, which has three open seats.

Two incumbents, Sam Dolcini and Sharon Hess, have filed for seats on the Laguna Joint School District board, which has three openings.

Stephen Rebscher, James Sanders and Aaron Michelson filed for the three open seats on the Lagunitas School District board.

Natalie Medved, Eric Schmautz and Amir Movafaghi filed for seats on the Larkspur-Corte Madera School District board, which has three openings.

Emily Charley and Beth Blair filed for the shortterm seat open on the Larkspur-Corte Madera School District board.

Carol Morganster­n, Sharon Nakatani, Yunhee Yoo, Natalie Katz and George Rosenfield will compete for three open seats on the Mill Valley School District board.

The two incumbents whose terms on the Nicasio School District board are ending, Mark Burton and Elaine Ross, filed for re-election.

The Novato Unified School District board has three available seats. Tief Jensen and Abbey Picus filed for the Area 4 seat. Diane Gasson filed for the Area 5 seat, and Magali Limeta filed for the Area 6 seat.

Sarah Buck-Gerber, Shelby Tsai, Afsaneh Zolfaghari and Sherry Wangenheim filed for seats on the Reed Union School District board, which has three openings.

Jeffrey Bergholt, Chris Ericksen and Darius Mozaffaria­n filed for the three openings on the Ross School District board.

Three candidates — Valeri Hood, Chris Landles-Cobb and Ryan O'Neil — will compete for two openings on the Ross Valley School District board.

Lauren Walters and Bonnie Hough filed for a seat on the Sausalito Marin City School District board, which has three openings.

The Shoreline Unified School District board has two available seats. Heidi Koenig, Buddy Faure and Tim Kehoe filed for the Area 1 seat, and Jane Healy filed for the Area 2 seat.

There are board seats in play at six community services districts.

Two of the three members of the Marin City Community Services District board whose terms are ending, Terrie Green and Angela Haynes, filed for reelection.

Three candidates — Steven Nash, Daniel Retz and Vincent Lattanzio — will compete for two seats on the Bel Marin Keys Community Services District Board.

Sivan Oyserman and William Shea filed for seats on the Marinwood Community Services District board, which has two open seats.

Four candidates — Christine Murray, Steven Shaffer, Leighton Hills and Pamela Swarts — will compete for three seats on the Muir Beach Community Services District board.

Jeff Brown and Jim Jacobs filed to run for the Tamalpais Community Services District board, which has two open seats.

Dru O'Neill, William Bonini and John Ward filed for seats on the Tomales Village Community Services District board, which has three open seats.

Positions at eight fire boards are up for grabs.

Nancy Torrey and Claire Molesworth filed for fouryear seats on the Bolinas Fire Protection District board, which has two such seats available. Billy Pierce filed for a short-term open seat.

Barry Evergettis, Steven Gerbsman and Ronald Naso filed for seats on the Kentfield Fire Protection District board, which has three openings.

The Novato Fire Protection District board has two four-year term seats and one short-term seat open. Bill Davis filed for the fouryear District 5 seat. Bruce Goines filed for the fouryear District 4 seat. Michael Hadfield filed for the shortterm District 2 seat.

Incumbent Rich Shortall filed for the open seat on the Sleepy Hollow Fire Protection District board.

Seven candidates — Kurt Chun, Christine Deberry, Peter Fleming, Thomas Perazzo, Lisa Wells, Amber Isakson and Sandra Bushmaker — will vie for four seats on the Southern Marin Fire Protection District board.

Mark White and Sean Greene filed for the two open seats on the Stinson Beach Fire Protection District board.

Five candidates — Cheryl Woodford, Richard Jones, Emmett O'Donnell, Brette Daniels and John Hamilton — will compete for three four-year seats on the Tiburon Fire Protection District board. Mark Capell filed for the district's shortterm seat.

Seven local sanitary district boards will elect members in November.

At the Alto Sanitary District, where there are two open seats, Marc Nash filed.

Allan Leibof and Alan Salzman filed for the two open seats on the Homestead Valley Sanitary District board.

Megan Clark, Ron Ford and Crystal Yezman filed for the three open seats on the Las Gallinas Valley Sanitary District board.

At the Novato Sanitary District board, Dennis Bentley and Gary Butler will compete for the Division 2 seat. Tim Fuette filed for the Division 3 seat. Carole Dillon-Knutson filed for the Division 5 seat.

Peter McIntosh, Patrick Walravens and Mark Fitzgerald filed for the three open seats on the Richardson Bay Sanitary District board.

Ann Arnott, James Delano and Dan Rheiner filed for the three open seats on the Sausalito-Marin City Sanitary District board.

Tod Moody and Catharine Benediktss­on filed for the two open seats on the Sanitary District No. 5 board.

Four candidates — Grace Godino, Jack Siedman, Andrew Green and Genie McNaughton — will compete for three open seats on the Bolinas Community Public Utility District board.

Kenneth Emanuels and David Press filed for the two open seats on the Inverness Public Utility District board.

Alexa Razma, Walter Tom, Mark Lucanic and J. Maalis will complete for three open seats on the Mesa Park board.

Two incumbents, Alex Johnson and Peter Teese, filed for seats on the Strawberry Recreation District board, which has three openings.

Sally Gale and Jerry Meral filed for the two open seats on the Marin Resource Conservati­on District board.
