Rivals set for mat showdown in North Coast Section semis

Redwood High junior Ali Hamzia and Novato senior Kekoa Madayag are heading for a rematch in their MCAL rivalry, but this time there's a North Coast Section title on the line. Both wrestlers are alive in the NCS title hunt in the 113 pound class, with a semifinal showdown looming Saturday.

Hamzia advanced to the semis with a 8-4 decision over Benicia's Nicolas zTrujillo in the quarterfin­als Friday. Hamzia earned pinfall wins in his first two matches Friday, against Liberty's Evan Ramirez and Monte Vista's Atakan Kaya. Madayag opened with a technical fall win over Castro Valley's Evan Santa Maria, then pinned California High's Benjamin Peralta and Middletown's Dominick Clark.

Archie Williams junior John McKenzie (145) wrestled his way into the semifinals with first-round pinfalls in his first three matches. McKenzie is assured of a top-six finish. Meanwhile Terra Linda's

Amrit Cheema was 2-2 and Novato's Alexander Tejada was 1-2 before they were both eliminated.

The NCS competitio­n continues Saturday at James Logan High in San Francisco. The Hornets' Ikaika Madayag is among the Marin wrestlers in consolatio­n action, hoping to still lock up a trip to Bakersfiel­d and a berth for the CIF State tournament. Ikaika Madayag battling his way through a tough 132-pound division. He started strong with wins in his first two matches, but lost in the quarterfin­als to Arcata's Josh Hannan, dropping him into the consolatio­n field.

In a whirlwind of matches at 132 pounds, Tam's Marco Spallas opened with a 4-1 victory over St. Vincent De Paul's Frankie Monticello. Spallas was 1-2 in his next three matches, however. The Giants' Nate Olsan lost his first match by decision, then was forced to retire from the competitio­n due to injury in a match against Monticello, who was later eliminated when he was pinned by Windsor's Christian

Matamoros.

Marin County's lightweigh­t wrestlers ran into trouble early on as Tam sophomore Sebastian Kauh and Novato junior Diego Ramos both lost their opening matches in the 106 pound bracket. Ramos earned four convincing victories as he worked his way through the consolatio­n rounds Friday, while Kauh lost his only two matches. Ramos is scheduled to continue wrestling in the consolatio­n round on Saturday, with four wins between him and a third-place overall finish.

Other Marin wrestlers who will be in action Saturday include Redwood's Jose Ordonez (120), Niko Sellers (126), Alexander Berkowitz (138) and Evan Daley (195) and Archie Williams' Alex McKenzie (160).

• San Marin's Jakayla McKee (1010 and Lyla Kondrashof­f (143), and Novato's Luana Stathopoul­os (143) and Olivia Munoz (131) all advanced to the quarterfin­alist the NCS girls tournament at Albany High on Friday. Action continues Saturday.

Boys tennis

Terra Linda notched a commanding 6-1 win at home over the Internatio­nal School on Friday, as Jack Rosenthal, En-Yu Liu and Julian Robin all won their singles matches. The Trojans swept doubles play.

• Redwood High's Jackson Sietler held off San Marin's Jesse Chi, 6-3, 6-4, at the top of the singles order to lead the Giants to a 7-0 sweep of the host Mustangs on Thursday. Redwood's Chris Lee, Lukas Berger and Marco Lombardo also won their singles matches.

College baseball

Jacob Campbell and Chris Delangis both homered to help power College of Marin's 9-8 win over Chabot, but it was Jacob's Anteneh RBI single in the top of the ninth that proved to be the game-winner.

Campbell also doubled twice as he was 4-for-6 at the plate, and scored three times. Lucas Schaefer, D'Andre Gaines, Delangis and Cam Appling also doubled for the Mariners (5-6).
