Giants’ Kapler praises first sessions of Webb, Harrison
Top prospect Kyle Harrison was at the center of the spotlight Friday, throwing to live major league hitters for the first time, but Logan Webb’s first live batting practice of the spring shouldn’t go overlooked, either.
“I think Webb looks physical. He looks physical on the mound. He looks imposing on the mound,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said Saturday, reflecting a day later. “Throwing a lot of strikes, understanding the pitch clock, attacking the zone. Stuff is moving well. I really thought it was good.”
Webb entered the offseason motivated, despite finishing 2022 with career bests in nearly every statistical category. He went 15-9 with a 2.90 ERA while making the most starts and pitching the most innings of his career, only 7 2/3 shy of the 200-inning milestone. His name appeared on a Cy Young ballot for the first time.
Yet, at various points this offseason, Webb has described feeling disappointed in his performance last year.
Often with Harrison, Webb was a frequent presence this offseason in the weight room and around the Giants’ Papago Park facilities.
He wants to throw 200 innings this year.
“That starts by putting a physical package together that can handle the wear and tear of the season,” Kapler said. “He’s done that. I definitely don’t think last year is going to be one of the best years on the back of his baseball card when it’s all said and done.”
As for Harrison, Kapler said, “I think there were some nerves. But you see all the talent. Some of the bat-missing capability was on display. It was cool to see.”
