San Domenico trio leads All-BCL selections

Marin Academy stars join league honors list

San Domenico basketball players Maja Cykowska, Lily Reeser and Gytis Gervickas were among the top honorees when the All-Bay Counties League West teams were announced this week.

Panthers senior Cykowska and junior guard Reeser were both first-team honorees after they helped lead San Domenico (23-7) to the North Coast Section Division V semifinals as the third seed before they fell to No. 2 University. Cykowska averaged 13 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks per game. Reeser led the league in 3-point shooting as she averaged 10 points per game.

The girls second team includes San Domenico junior Averey Conklin (eight points and four rebounds per game) and Marin Academy sophomore guard Amelia Thomas, who led the Wildcats(12-13) in scoring (11.25), steals (4.5) and assists (3.8). Marin Academy broke into the NCS D-V tournament as the ninth seed.

San Domenico's Mattie Greenstone (seven points and six rebounds per game) and Marin Academy's leader in rebounds Noa Friedman-Lowenthal (8.5 rebounds and 6.2 points per game) earned honorable mentions.

A standout season earned San Domenico senior Gervickas a spot on the All-BCL West boys first team. Gervickas averaged 16.5 points per game, including 41 percent shooting from beyond the arc. San Domenico (228) reached the NCS D-V semifinals as the third seed before falling to No. 2 Head Royce, 55-45.

Panthers sophomore Gavin Early (15.9 points and 8.9 rebounds per game) was tabbed to the second team, as was Marin Academy senior Ethan Wenner, who averaged 14.2 points per game to lead the Wildcats (1414), who reached the second round of the NCS D-V playoffs.

San Domenico senior Matis Burinskas (4.9 assists per game) and Marin Academy senior Mercer Yee received honorable mentions. Yee led the Wildcats in steals (2.1) and blocks (1.3) per game.

Prep wrestling

Novato High's Kekoa Madayag is still in action Saturday after a setback early on. Madayag opened Thursday's

action with a stellar 6-1 victory over Vacaville's Wyatt Sandoval, but then fell to Carlo Arreola of Granite Hills from the San Diego Section in a 8-6 decision. Madayag advanced to Saturday's action after a pair of 10-0 consolatio­n victories.

Archie Williams' John McKenzie (145) ran into trouble with losses to Colton Silva of Oakdale and Ryan Carroll of Granite Hills.

On the girls side, the MCAL's 143-pound champion Luana Stathopoul­os of Novato is continuing her quest, although she is battling through the consolatio­n rounds. Stathopoul­os opened the tournament after bye with a pin against Norwalk's Casey Otero. She lost to Jennah Creason of Redwood, 6-2, in the round of 16. After pinning Ventura's Bella Smith in 44 seconds of a consolatio­n match, Stathopoul­os scored a second consolatio­n round win to advance to Saturday's action.

San Marin's Lyla Kondrashof­f (143) started fast with a 21-8 victory over Ariel Preciado of Ponderosa. A pinfall loss to Birmingham's Adelaida Fernandez knocked Kondrashof­f into the consolatio­n round, where she was eliminated by Shyra Randle of Natomas.

The Mustangs' Jakayla McKee (101) saw action in two matches, in which she was pinned by Birmingham's Avy Perez and Brawley's Jaylee Cazares.

The Hornets' Olivia Munoz (131) won one of her three matches. She bounced back from a 6-4 loss to Stantiago's Alexandra Argumosa in her first match.

Munoz pinned Liliana Standen of Matilda Torres in consolatio­n action before she was eliminated with a 4-3 loss to Foothill's Britney Morales.

College baseball

College of Marin's bats exploded for three runs in the top of the first inning, but the Mariners could not hold off host San Mateo in Friday's 7-4 loss, the first game in a home-and-home series. The two teams meet again Saturday in Kentfield.

An RBI single by Chris Delangis and a two-run double by Steven Elsner got the Mariners started in the first inning, but a four-run fifth inning gave San Mateo a 6-4 lead.

Marin starter Bryant Thornton threw three innings as he allowed two runs on three hits and three walks.
