Marin hoops teams enjoy early NorCal success

Top-seeded Marin Catholic defeated No. 16 Los Gatos handily, 52-32, to take its first step toward a CIF Girls basketball Division II Northern California title. The Wildcats (27-5) will face No. 9 Christian Brothers in the second round of the tournament on Thursday.

Senior Gracyn Lovette drove the Wildcats with 16 points, boosted by outstandin­g performanc­es from Izzy McFadden (13 points) and Madie Dayton (10 points). Cecily Hadd scored eight points.

• San Domenico is back in familiar territory in the NorCal Division IV regionals, and apparently feeling comfortabl­e with a 44-29 first-round win over No. 16 Priory. The top-seeded Panthers capped the evening

with a 23-3 run to close the game. Junior Averey Conklin played a strong all-around game with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals.

San Domenico (24-7) is scheduled to face either No. 8 Pierce or No. 9 East Union on Thursday.

• Hannah Golan is turning up the heat as the Bulls venture deeper into the postseason. Second-seeded Branson

defeated No. 15 Los Altos 65-50 Tuesday in the first round of the NorCal Division III regionals behind a 27-point effort from Golan, who added nine points and six steals. Rosie Slayen added 14 points. Isabella Arauz-Moore scored 10 points and sophomore Avery Myerberg tallied six points.

Branson (19-12) is scheduled to play Thursday against No. 7 Foothill (228), a 61-53 winner over No. 10 Saint Francis.

Boys basketball

The Branson School's Semetri Carr is being courted by Washington State, he announced on Twitter. Carr, an All-MCAL first team pick, said he has received an offer from the Cougars.

Women's basketball

Dominican University senior Brittney Cedeno and freshman Keyonee Neal both received conference nods, the PacWest announced Tuesday. Voted by coaches and communicat­ions staff, Cedeno was named the Defender of the Year while Neal earned Freshman of the Year status in addition to both athletes being named to allconfere­nce teams — Cedeno to the first team, Neal to the second.

Boys golf

Sean Madden fired a 39 at Marin Country Club to lead Terra Linda past Novato 211-284 on Tuesday. Trojans teammate Kyle Martin shot a 41. The Hornets were led by Joseph Kobayashi and Liam Everyone, who both carded 54s.

• The loss on Tuesday was Novato's second in two days, coming on the heels of a 212-294 defeat at the hands of Redwood and

Sam Sumski, who fired a 38 at the Meadow Club on Monday. The Giants' Brody Root carded 42, followed by Chase Oldenbrook (43), Dominic Orlando (44), Arjun Aujla (45) and Jack Mount (47).

• Truman Ashforth outpaced the field with a 36 Monday to lead Marin Catholic past Archie Williams, 214-261. Kyle Forrest had the second-best score of the day with a 41 for Marin Catholic. The Wildcats' Luca DeNunzio and Oli DeGraeve tied with 45s, while Nathan Frost and Mason Sylvester each shot a 47.

Colton Mansbridge paced the Falcons with a 48, followed Calvin Cavanna (50) and Aidan Dolan and Nathan Cloughley, each with a 52. Nicholas Lillevand (59) and Grant Guild (60) rounded out the field for Archie Williams.

Motor sports

Sonoma Raceway announced the opening date for its 2023 Drags & Drift Series, scheduled for Wednesday, March 15 at 4 p.m. The day includes a car show and a St. Patrick's Day themed celebratio­n. Event spectators are $20 with kids 12 and younger admitted free.

Sonoma Drags & Drift gives drivers a safe, legal, and controlled environmen­t to drag race and drift their cars, away from city streets. During the events, Sonoma Raceway opens its world-famous quarter mile dragstrip to any vehicle that passes a basic tech and safety inspection.
