Marin Academy's Zalayet named MVP
Marin Academy's Malcolm Zalayet was named the MVP for boys soccer in the Bay Counties League West when the all-league teams were released on Monday.
Zalayet, a striker, led the team in scoring during a season in which it went undefeated in league play, made a North Coast Section final and won a NorCal title.
Five of Zalayet's teammates were named to the first team — goalie Alex Hayward, defenders Parker Mascott, Tristan Schauble and Diego Doyle, plus midfielder Dane Knudsen.
San Domenico's Angelo Neto and Enzo Zamorano were also selected to the first team.
The girls soccer team, fresh off its own NorCal title, placed three players on the league's first team with midfielders Chloe Swindle and Kacy Walker, plus forward Imogen Jenkyn. San Domenico's Saliah Johnson also made the first team.
San Domenico, which hosts the NorCal Division IV championship game at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Dominican University, placed two players — Maja Cykowska and Lily Reeser — on the first team for girls basketball. San Domenico's Gytis Gervickas made the first team on the boys side.
Full lists for all-league teams can be found at bacbcl.org and will run later
this month when the IJ reveals its own Winter Player of the Year selections.
Thomara Drummer hit her first home run of the season but that was all the offense San Rafael would muster in a 5-1 loss to Albany in the season opener.
The Bulldogs (0-1) were limited to two hits on the day, with Drummer's home run coming in the fourth inning. Megan Murphy had the other hit and also drew a walk.
Drummer pitched 3.1 innings of shutout relief — allowing two hits while striking out four — after the Bulldogs surrendered five runs across the first three innings.
