Redwood opens MCAL with win over San Marin

Rory Minty drove in three runs at the plate and scattered 10 hits on the mound to lead the Redwood High baseball team to a 5-1 win against San Marin on Tuesday.

Minty, Tyler Sofnas and Theo Trono had two hits each to pace the Giants (5-1, 1-0 MCAL). Redwood jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first thanks to an RBI double by Rex Solle followed by an RBI single by Minty.

San Marin scored a single run in the bottom of the second before Redwood pulled away with single runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings. Minty pitched all seven innings, striking out six. Josh Martin paced the Mustangs (3-2, 2-1) with three hits.

• Andy Gates had three hits, drove in two runs and scored two more to lead Novato to a 10-1 win against Archie Williams Tuesday. Novato scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings then blew the game open with a five-run sixth inning. Hannes Gerber and Julian Oliver had two hits apiece for the Hornets (4-3, 1-2), who benefitted from four errors by the Peregrine Falcons (1-4, 0-3).

• Liam Smith. Maddox Thompson and Carl Schmidt drove in three runs apiece as Marin Catholic secured a 12-6 win against Branson. MC scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take a 12-0 lead before Branson put together a six-run rally in the top of the seventh. Emmet George allowed two hits and struck out three in six innings of work for MC (6-0, 3-0). Norm AuYeung had a triple and three RBIs to pace the Bulls (5-2, 2-1).

• Tam put together a sixrun fourth inning en route to a 7-0 victory against San Rafael. Starting pitcher Tyler Buxton went six innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out six. Charlie Blau had a hit and drove in a pair of runs for Tam (3-3, 3-0). San Rafael (14, 0-3) was limited to three hits — two of them by Marcos Tolliver.

College baseball

College of Marin put together a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, breaking a tie en route to a 5-3 victory against Yuba.

Caleb Jeske plated the winning run with a fielder's choice then Jacob Anteneh singled home an insurance run for the Mariners (6-12), who ended a six-game losing streak.

COM trailed 2-0 before rallying in the fourth inning. Former Terra Linda High standout Chris de Langis had an RBI double then Steven Elsner hit a two-run homer to give COM a 3-2 lead.

Boys golf

Max Berg and Hayden

Thill put up matching 1-under-par scores of 31 at Mill Valley Golf Course to pace Tam to a 166-257 win against San Rafael on Tuesday. The score was a season best for the Red-tailed Hawks (3-1). Kai Payne shot a 43 to lead the Bulldogs.

• Turman Ashforth shot a 36 at Marin Country Club to lead Marin Catholic past Novato, 213-274. Joseph Kobayashi paced the Hornets with a 46.

• Charlie Farrell shot a 37 at Peacock Gap to lead Branson to a 197-243 win against Archie Williams on Tuesday. Branson also got 39s from Ryan Herbrt and Barry Liu. Ben Beak led a balanced effort for the Peregrine Falcons with a 47.

Boys tennis

Jackson Sichel picked up the win at No. 1 singles as Redwood defeated Marin Catholic, 5-2. The Giants also got singles wins from Lukas Berger and Jackson Tito Adams. MC's Jack Millar got the win at No. 2 singles.

• Henry Pratt, Johan Jacobs, Anders Jacobs and Henry Gamble swept the Nos. 1-4 singles matches, respective­ly, to lead Archie Williams to a 6-1 win against Terra Linda. TL's lone win came at No. 1 doubles with Wyatt Dunn and Rupert Atkins.

Girls lacrosse

Eleven different Tam players found the back of the net as the Red-tailed Hawks rolled to a 20-4 victory against University on Tuesday. Tam (3-0) also defeated Vista del Lago of Folsom 15-8 on Saturday.
