Group set to honor women in leadership

The Marin Women's Political Action Committee will hold its annual luncheon for elected women on March 24.

The event, marking Women's History Month, will honor female student leaders from the county's high schools and colleges.

The keynote speaker will be Shannon Hovis, director of the state chapter of NARAL ProChoice. Dominican University president Nicola Pitchford also will speak.

Dora Knell, a longtime committee member and former member of the Marin chapter of the National Women's Political Caucus, will be honored posthumously.

The luncheon is set for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Club at McInnis Park at 350 Smith Ranch Road.

Fire crews rescued a dog from a blaze in the Tamalpais Valley neighborhood.

The fire was reported Friday night at an apartment complex on 406 Maple St., according to the Southern Marin Fire Protection District.

A responding engine company arrived and found smoke and flames from one apartment in the building. The dog was rescued from the balcony of the burning apartment on the third floor, Southern Marin fire Battalion Chief Doug Patterson said.

No injuries were reported to residents or the dog.

Firefighters from Marin County, Tiburon, Central Marin, Kentfield, San Rafael and Novato responded along with Pacific Gas & Electric Co., the Marin County Sheriff's Office and the California Highway Patrol.

The estimated damage to the building was $700,000.

The cause remains under investigation.
