Calcaterra, Trammell to represent Marin during March Madness

-

Marin will have two representatives in the men's basketball tournament when March Madness kicks off later this week.

Former Marin Catholic standout Joey Calcaterra and Marin City's Darrion Trammell — who went to St. Ignatius High — are both making their Tournament debuts with new teams after making use of the transfer portal in the offseason.

Calcaterra transferred from the University of San Diego to Connecticut and scored 5.8 points per game in 32 appearances for the Huskies (25-8). Calcaterra scored a season-high 15 points on two occasions — against Buffalo on Nov. 15 and St. John's on Feb. 25.

UConn is the No. 4 seed in the West Region and plays No. 13 Iona in Albany, N.Y. at 1:30 p.m. PST on Friday. The game is set to air on TBS.

Coaches are encouraged to report scores, stats and game details via email to sports@marinij.com or to @marinij_sports on Twitter following games. Anything that comes in after the deadline for print — around 8 p.m. typically — will be included the following day.

Calcaterra was the MCAL Player of the Year in 2017 when he set league records for single-season scoring (395 points) and career points (1.063).

Trammell scored 9.5 points per game in his first season at San Diego State after lighting up the West Coast Conference for Seattle University. Trammell averaged 20.5 and 17.3 points per game in the previous two seasons, respectively, for the Redhawks.

Trammell, who led the Aztecs (27-6) this season with 107 assists, accomplished his season high of 21 points on three different occasions — against BYU, Arizona and UNLV.

The Aztecs are fresh off a victory in the Mountain West Championships with victories against Colorado State, San Jose State and Utah State. Trammell scored 19 points across those three games, scoring 15 in the semifinals against SJSU.

San Diego State enters the Tournament as the No. 5 seed in the South Region and faces No. 12 Charleston in a first-round game at 12:10 p.m. PST on Thursday in Orlando. The game is set to air on truTV.
