Tam's big spring continues with more titles

- By Ian Ross iross@marinij.com

It's been pretty good to be a Red-tailed Hawk in recent weeks. Tam has piled up pennants and trophies in a variety of sports this spring and that trend continued this past week.

The festivities began in earnest on Thursday when the Mill Valley school hosted a pair of North Coast Section Division II lacrosse title games, ultimately winning both.

On Friday, it was the baseball team's turn to celebrate despite entering the MCAL playoffs as the lowest seed. Saturday saw the school's standout swimmer win a state title.

Rowie Scobie, Tam girls lacrosse

The sophomore led her team in scoring last week as the Red-tailed Hawks secured the first NCS D-II title in program history following a 15-5 win over Campolindo on Thursday. Scobie led a balanced attack in Tam's semifinal win against University, tying for team-high honors with Annie Shine and Madi Smith with three goals apiece. Scobie doubled her tally in the title game, scoring a team-high six goals against Campolindo.

Lachlan Hindley, Tam boys lacrosse

Hindley provided the most important goal of the season for Tam, scoring the winner in double overtime of the NCS D-II title game against Piedmont on Thursday. Hindley won the opening draw in the second overtime, took the ball down the field and scored to give Tam a 9-8 lead and end the game. Hindley won 13 of 21 face-offs to help Tam win its second consecutive section crown.

Kaiden Dossa and Charlie Blau, Tam baseball

The Red-tailed Hawks open the MCAL playoffs as the No. 4 seed and had to face regular-season champion Marin Catholic in the semifinals. Dossa turned in a strong outing, limiting the Wildcats to six hits and one run over 6.2 innings while striking out eight. Blau, his catcher, drove in a pair of runs in the 7-1 win against MC and drove in two more in the 8-4 win against San Marin. Tam opens the NCS D-II playoffs at home against Maria Carrillo at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Georgia Pineda, Redwood softball

The Giants ace stepped up big time in the MCAL playoffs, delivering two of her best all-around games of the season to help Redwood lift the pennant. Pineda pitched all 14 innings in victories over San Marin and Marin Catholic, allowing 12 combined hits, five runs (two earned) and striking out nine. What Pineda did at the plate was arguably even more impactful, going 6 for 7 with five RBIs across the two games. Pineda and the

Giants continue their season in the NCS D-II playoffs with a home game at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Ukiah.

Marre Gattnar, Tam boys swimming

Gattnar made history on Saturday, becoming the first male athlete from Marin to win a CIF state championship in swimming. Gattnar touched the wall first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 47.76 seconds to win the race by .07 seconds. The state championships started in 2015 and Gattnar is just the second swimmer from

Marin to win a title. Terra Linda's Halle Morris won a state title in the 100 breast in 2016.

Ryan Herbst, Branson boys golf

Herbst took medalist honors at the NCS D-II qualifier last Monday at Rooster Run Golf Club in Petaluma, shooting a 3-under-par 69 to help the Bulls claim the team title. “I played my short game. I had only five drives and played well off the tees,” Herbst said. “I was worried the greens would be wet and super slow, but they dried

out later in the day and the putting was solid.”

Jeffrey Huang and Max Goldman, Branson boys tennis

Branson's top two players led the way throughout the campaign as the Bulls capped a 23-0 season by winning four matches last week to secure the program's first section title since 2013.

Drake Miller, Tam boys track

For the second consecutive week, Miller won three solo events at a championship meet. Two weeks ago it was the MCAL championships and last week, Miller did it again at the NCS Redwood Empire meet at San Rafael High. Miller's day was highlighted by a school-record-tying high jump of 6 feet, 8 inches. Miller also won the pole vault (13'11”) and the 110-meter hurdles (14.97 seconds). The next step for all the top track athletes is the NCS Meet of Champions on Friday and Saturday at Dublin High.

Daegan Cutter, Redwood boys track

Cutter was also a triple winner on Saturday, claiming solo victories in the 1,600 (4:15.45) and the 3,200 (9:23.08) before helping the Giants win the 4×800 relay en route to the team title at the Redwood Empire meet. Cutter ran the first leg followed by Nathan Wollenweber, Ethan Werner, and Gabriel Cavanagh.

Adeline Johnson, Branson girls track

The senior narrowly missed winning back-toback “iron triples” at the MCAL Championships and the NCS Class A Meet the past two weeks. Johnson secured all three victories at MCALs and won the 800 (2:17.08) and the 3,200 (11:38.05) on Saturday. Johnson took second place in the 1,600 (5:06.92).
