Marin artists part of exhibit

-

Nearly 90 artists from Marin will be in the spotlight when their artwork goes on display at the Triennial de Young Open 2023. The event, originally called the de Young Open 2020 when it launched three years ago, is the only exhibition of its kind at a major United States museum.

It is open to the public from Sept. 30 to Jan. 7.

“We launched the de Young Open in 2020 in celebration of the de Young museum's 125th anniversary and as a call to action to support our local artists during the pandemic, offering them professional opportunities to show and sell their work at the museum,” says Anisa Esmail, communications coordinator of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. “Our aim is to bring the breadth of Bay Area artistic talent to new audiences.”

Because of its popularity, it will now take place every three years and be called the Triennial de Young Open.

“The first iteration in 2020 generated a lot of enthusiasm and was very warmly received by local artists and visitors to the museum,” she says. “We felt we should make the de Young Open a Fine Arts Museums tradition.”

Artists, over the age of 18 and from any of the nine Bay Area counties, are invited to submit their artworks, created within the last three years, for consideration and pay no submission fee. The artwork is juried anonymously from digital images without any artist-identifying information and is based on the concept, originality, technique and execution, aesthetic qualities and successful use of materials, along with the overall impact of the work.

More than 900 pieces of art — spread across nine mediums such as painting, photography, drawing, prints, fiber, sculpture video film, and digital art — will explore contemporary issues shaping life in the Bay Area and beyond.
