Tam wins two matches to reach tourney semis

Tamalpais High advanced to the semifinals of the Vintage Valley boys water polo tournament in Napa with two wins in Friday's opening rounds. The Red-tailed Hawks (6-1, 2-1) are scheduled to play Foothill-Pleasanton at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Tam junior Reed Hanna scored three goals and added two assists in Friday's 9-8 victory over Clayton Valley to kick off the tournament. Senior Quin Concannon scored twice.

The Hawks defeated Liberty-Brentwood in the second game Friday as Hanna scored six goals. Junior Andrew Sternfels added three goals and two steals.

• Sophomore Cameron Hellar is following up on his stellar freshman campaign with another strong season as Terra Linda looks to return to the playoffs. Hellar scored five goals and assisted on another in the Trojans' 12-8 victory over Novato on Thursday. Trojans junior Soren Jessen had three goals and junior Andrew Chang scored twice and had three assists. Trojans goalkeeper Sam Frack had 14 saves.

Girls water polo

Undefeated Marin Academy continued an impressive start to the season with Thursday's 12-6 victory over Marin Catholic. With Marin Academy (6-0, 3-0) holding on to a 5-3 lead at the half, Gabby Reichley stepped up with five second-half goals. Cece Dickinson added three goals and six steals for Marin Academy, which also got one goal each from Reina Buchanan, Kelly Kurtzig and Hannah Reichley. Marin Academy's Caroline Starrett had eight saves in net.

Claire Cassidy and Emma Slaught each scored three goals for Marin Catholic.

• Junior goalkeeper Haley Brown stopped 11 shots as Terra Linda defeated Novato, 14-4, on Thursday. Senior Julia Hamilton led the Trojans with five goals and an assist. Junior Emily Erickson had two goals and four assists, while junior Jessa Dunn scored two goals and added three assists.

Women's water polo

College of Marin's Alana McCartney, who leads the state in goals (46) and steals (41), has been named the California Community College Water Polo Coaches Associatio­n Player of the Week. The Mariners are at Mount San Antonio College for the Mountie Classic this weekend. They opened the tournament Friday with a 8-2 win over Cypress.

Field hockey

Maya Seibel and Samantha Haan each scored two goals as Redwood powered past Lick-Wilmerding, 7-0, Friday in Larkspur. Lucy Jeffers scored a goal and assisted on three others, while Isabella Wagner and Virginia Baker also scored

one goal each. Amanda Mueller, Haan and Jane Broderick were each credited with an assist.

Goalkeeper Caroline Mueller needed to make only one save for the shutout.

“We elevated our athleticis­m, skills, team communicat­ion, and played as a winning team,” Redwood co-coach Jen Reidy said. “I could not be more proud of these girls. I am excited for the coming weeks.”

Redwood is scheduled to play at Archie Williams on Wednesday to start a busy week. The Giants are at Berkeley on Thursday, then host non-league foe Pleasant Valley on Friday, Sept. 29.

• Playoff contenders Marin Catholic and University battled to a scoreless tie on Friday in the Presidio. The Wildcats had several chances but University kept the ball out of the net. Meanwhile, Marin Catholic's defense didn't allow many open shots. Marin Catholic is scheduled to play Berkeley on Tuesday and Convent on Friday.

Girls tennis

Archie Williams wrapped up a 5-2 win over Terra Linda at San Rafael High on Friday as the Peregrine Falcons swept doubles play and got wins at the bottom of the singles order from Amalya Rajparia and Chloe Grahm.

The Trojans' Kylie Lee held tough at No. 1 singles for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win over the Falcons' Siena Michelson. Terra Linda's Jamie Schmidt scored a 6-4, 6-7 (10-2) win at No. 2 singles over Alegra D'Carpegna.

• Marin Catholic swept doubles play en route to a 6-1 victory over Terra Linda on Thursday. The Wildcats' Sienna Taylor rebounded to defeat Schmidt 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 at No. 2 singles to help clinch the win. Marin Catholic's Ellie Damiani and Sofia Paletta won at Nos. 3 and 4 singles, as well.

The Trojans avoided the sweep as Lee battled to a 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 win over Marin Catholic's Payton Greco at No. 1 singles.

• The Branson School juggled its lineup, but swept San Rafael, 7-0. Paloma Vano-Rece, Gaby Steele, Alexa Warrin and Clarissa Chong dominated singles play for the Bulls.

• Redwood High cruised past Novato, 7-0, Thursday, with Jordan Marotto and Gwenn Ricordel both winning 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respective­ly. The two closest matchups of the day came at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, where Lindsay Reed and Jennie Liu each won 6-1, 6-1, respective­ly.
