Tam pulls away in shootout vs. Archie Williams

- By Tim Menicutch

The skies weren't the only thing that opened up Saturday afternoon in San Anselmo.

The Tam High offense, behind senior quarterback Braden Young's six touchdown passes, also cut loose as the visiting Red-tailed Hawks stormed past Archie Williams 63-30 in an MCAL football game.

Despite a slick surface after an unexpected cloudburst drenched the artificial surface right before halftime, Young was nearly flawless, completing 12-of-14 passes for 279 yards.

“It's mostly a great offensive line and obviously some quality players at the skill positions,” said Young, who has thrown 25 touchdown passes for the Redtailed Hawks (5-1, 2-0 MCAL). “They make it easy on me. They make me look good.”

Tam took nearly four minutes off the clock on the game's opening drive and rolled 55 yards on eight plays, culminating with a two-yard touchdown plunge by running back Ethan Koo.

Despite the impressive opening drive, the Peregrine Falcons (1-4, 0-2) showed they were there to play. They answered right back with a 60-yard touchdown drive of their own, with Tony Rojas accounting for the final yard on his first of three touchdown runs on the day.

The Peregrine Falcons, however, learned quickly soon after they tied the score at 7-7 that they would have to find a way to at least slow Young if they were to have any shot at an upset. They never did find a way. Young needed one play — a 60-yard hook-up with Andrew Gordon — to regain the lead for Tam.

Archie Williams battled right back to tie the score at 1414 when Rojas turned the corner untouched after his outside blockers blew up the edge and raced 48 yards for a touchdown.
