Upsets shake up Tiburon Challenger

The Tiburon Challenger saw a pair of upsets in singles play Tuesday as No. 4 seed Denis Kudla and No. 6 Vasek Pospisil both lost to unseeded opponents in the second day of opening round play at Tiburon Peninsula Club.

Kudla fell to Australia's Bernard Tomic, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (12), while Pospisil lost to Australia's Adam Walton 6-4, 7-6 (3).

Top-seeded Alex Michelsen of Laguna Hills rebounded to defeat Canadian Brayden Schnur, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4. No. 7 seed Ryan Peniston and eighth seed Tennys Sandgren both advanced after hard-earned wins. Peniston edged unseeded Mitchell Krueger 7-6 (4), 6-2. Sandgren eliminated Cannon Kingsley 6-4, 6-4. Other singles winners included Nishesh Basavaredd­y, ThaiSon Kwiatkowsk­i, Mark Lajal, Tristan Schoolkate and Learner Tien.

In doubles play, Evan King and Krueger beat Christian Harrison and Mikelis Libietis 7-6 (13), 6-3. Patrick Kypson and Ethan Quinn ousted Christian

Langmo and Luke Tusher, 6-3, 6-2.

Prep football

The California Interschol­astic Federation announced Wednesday the three sites for the State Football Championsh­ip Bowl Games in all 15 divisions. The host sites will be El Camino College in Torrance, Pasadena City College, and Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, with games to be played Dec. 8-9, following the completion of Regional Championsh­ip Games.

All 2023 CIF Regional Championsh­ip Bowl Games will be held at host sites which will be announced on Sunday, Nov. 26, following the selection meeting.

Girls golf

The scores were competitiv­e as Marin Catholic split matches with the Branson School and Archie Williams at StoneTree on Tuesday. Branson defeated Marin Catholic 172-205, but the Wildcats held off Archie Williams 205-221. The Bulls Lizzie Liu and Aimee Yang tied for low medalist honors at 39, with the Peregrine

Falcons' Ryan Magnusson joining them. The Wildcats' Lexi Ferguson shot a 40.

• In a three-way match at Marin Country Club on Tuesday, Tamalpais finished with the low score of the day at 211, led by medalist Lola Spendov, who shot a 42. San Marin tallied a 238, with Novato at 248. The Mustangs' Sammy Low shot a 54, and the Hornets' Hayley Picetti came around at 58.

• Marin Academy remains unbeaten (7-0) in BCL play with Tuesday's 169211 win against Convent at Fleming Golf Course. Elsa Anderson's 8-over par 38 led the Wildcats, who got balanced scoring from Cameron Colpitts (43), Genevieve Zeches (44) and Sterling Colpitts (44).

Boys water polo

Jakob Engberg scored four goals to lead Redwood High past San Marin, 13-8, on Monday, while Cormac Erving and Charlie Poser each scored three goals. Maddox McClellan added two goals for the Giants (96, 5-0), who also got a goal from Zach Baumgarten.

Sophomore Beckett Corridan led the Mustangs (89, 0-5) with four goals, and freshman Daniel Voelker added three goals. Vaughn Miguel rounded out the scoring for San Marin.

Redwood's junior varsity team rolled to a 16-7 victory.

Girls water polo

Redwood defeated San Marin, 14-3, Monday. The Mustangs got scoring from Tipkritta Thomson, Julia Owens and Reese Cordero.

Girls tennis

Katie Warren's victory at No. 2 singles helped clinch the Branson School's 4-3 victory over Marin Catholic on Monday. Warren defeated the Wildcats' Payton Greco, 6-0, 6-1. The Bulls also got singles wins from Paloma Vano-Rice and Simone Schachtner at Nos. 3-4, respective­ly.

Marin Catholic's Maya Mosher held off the Bulls' Audrey Gilmore, 6-4, 6-4, at No. 1 singles.

• Tam swept San Rafael, 7-0 on Monday, with Annika Hakes, Amalie Stoker, Scarlett Wilson and Delaney Babbitt each earning commanding singles victories for the Red-tailed Hawks (7-3).
