Georgia remains No. 1 as streak at top keeps going

Ohio State passed Michigan and moved up to No. 2 in The Associated Press college football poll Sunday, a week before the Big Ten rivals play another top-five matchup, and No. 4 Washington flip-flopped with No. 5 Florida State.

Georgia remained No. 1 and received a season-high 61 first-place votes. The Bulldogs have been atop the rankings for 23 straight weeks, the second-best streak in poll history and 10 behind the record held by USC (2003-05).

The top five teams had held their places for five straight weeks. All improved to 11-0 on Saturday, but their order changed Sunday.

Michigan had been No. 2 since the preseason but slipped a spot after playing its closest game yet. The Wolverines, without suspended

head coach Jim Harbaugh, beat Maryland 31-24.

Washington won 22-20 on the road against Oregon State Saturday night, which slipped five spots to No. 15, and moved up a spot. The Huskies have their highest ranking since reaching No. 4 in 2016, the last time the Pac-12 had a team in the College

Football Playoff.

Florida State fell a spot after beating North Alabama 58-13, but lost quarterback Jordan Travis (leg injury).

No. 6 Oregon, No. 7 Texas, No. 8 Alabama and No. 9 Louisville all held their spots after victories, and Missouri moved up to No. 10.

APPLE CUP >> An ancient West Coast football rivalry will continue into the next era as the Washington schools announced an agreement to continue the Apple Cup following the breakup of the Pac-12.

The Cougars and Huskies signed a five-year contract that begins next season with a neutral-field matchup, followed by four games played on a home-and-home basis.

Washington is moving to the Big Ten in 2024 while WSU is expected to compete in the Pac-12 along with Oregon State — an unprecedented two-team conference.

The Apple Cup game set for Sept. 14, 2024 will be played at Lumen Field, the home of the Seahawks.

The 2025 and 2027 games will be in Pullman, with the 2026 and 2028 matchups at Husky Stadium.

SYRACUSE FIRES BABERS >> Syracuse fired coach Dino Babers after eight years with the Orange that included a 41-55 overall record and just two bowl appearances.
