Honoring his legacy
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. remembered at San Francisco Bay Area events
The life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will never be forgotten. San Anselmo's Aaron Grizzell, the executive director of the NorcalMLK Foundation, will make sure of that.
Every year in January, the NorcalMLK Foundation, with support from an array of community partners, puts on a multiday celebration of in-person and online events to honor the minister and activist throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.
“The idea is to be able to have something for everyone, for all walks of life,” Grizzell says.
The celebration, which kicked off Monday and runs through Jan. 16, will feature a wide variety of events, including the SIDGE Symposium on Thursday and Friday, where data science, ethics and social impact intersects, the King & Faith Series, which presents contemporary contemplation of Dr. King, his message and his legacy, from Wednesday through Monday, and the Black & Brown Comix Arts Festival, a nationally awarded comic book event highlighting artists and creators of color, from Saturday through Monday, which also features a
new Cosplay Soirée on Saturday night at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.
Through this annual celebration, as well as other events put on by the foundation throughout the year, Grizzell hopes to continue to show how Dr. King connects with the present-day world as well as showcase the many sides to him, even down to his love of “Star Trek.”
This year's theme is “social justice and beloved community.”
The events in honor of Dr. King continue at 12:30 p.m. today with a concert, in partner
