Redwood's Stathopoul­os advances to state semifinals

Redwood High wrestler Luana Stathopoul­os advanced to the semifinals of the CIF State championsh­ips in Bakersfiel­d on Friday.

Stathopoul­os, the tournament's No. 3 seed in the 140-pound bracket, won her first three matches to move into Saturday's semifinals. The top four seeds all advanced meaning Stathopoul­os faces No. 2 seed Olivia Davis of Monte Vista. Top seed Gianna DiBenedett­o of Bella Vista takes on No. 4 seed Faith Bartoszek of Northview in the other semifinal.

San Marin's Lyla Kondrashof­f, also in the 140-pound bracket, lost to the fifth seed in the round of 32. Kondrashof­f won her first consolatio­n match before being eliminated in her second match.

Redwood's Ali Hamzia went 0-2 in the boys 132-pound bracket.

Prep baseball

Cole Chamberlai­n doubled and drove in three runs to lead San Marin to a 5-1 win against Sacred Heart Prep on Thursday. Joey Cipollina had a double, scored twice and pitched an inning for the Mustangs (1-1). Sean McGrath went six innings, allowing four hits with seven strikeouts.

The Mustangs were coming off a 4-2 loss to Bishop O'Dowd on Wednesday. Tyler Keehn and Tanner O'Keefe combined to throw six innings with eight strikeouts. San Marin opens MCAL play on Tuesday at home against Tam.

• Treyvor Matthews hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth to give Branson the lead for good in a 4-2 win against Justin-Siena on Friday. Matthews' hit scored Liam Parrot and Kaden Gustafson, giving the Bulls (3-0) a 3-2 lead. Branson added an insurance run when Cooper Tenney executed a suicide squeeze following a triple by Charlie Zwibelman. Mo Jacoby started and pitched 4.2 innings with two earned runs and five strikeouts. Jacoby also had two hits and drove in a run. The Bulls open league play at Redwood on Tuesday.

• Jack Hanna starred on the mound and at the plate to lead Tam to a 2-0 win against Rancho Cotate on Thursday. Hanna pitched five innings and struck out five. He also went 2 for 3 at the place with a double. Scott Olinger went two innings to earn the save for Tam (1-1).

• J.P. Harmon struck out eight in five innings of one-hit ball and added an RBI double and two runs as a hitter as Novato opened the season with a 4-1 win against Montgomery on Thursday. Novato opens league play at Terra Linda on Tuesday.

• Toby Richards hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to account for all the scoring in Marin Catholic's 3-0 win against Northgate on Thursday. Liam Smith and Jack McGovern combined on the shutout for MC (1-0). The Wildcats open league at home Tuesday against Archie Williams.

College baseball

San Mateo scored 12 runs in the first three innings as College of Marin's skid hit four games in a 13-5 loss on Thursday.

Former Tam standout Matteo Bellisimo hit a solo home run and scored twice for the Mariners (68). Former Novato standout Derek Bartram and Skylar Lenihan each had two hits for COM. Benny Nazario had two RBIs.

Boys tennis

Rex Rutchik and Oscar Mason picked up wins at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, respective­ly, to lead Marin Academy to a 5-2 victory against Marin Catholic on Friday. MA swept the doubles matches to secure the victory.

MC got wins from Jack Millar and Qas Vidyarthi at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respective­ly.

Men's basketball

Garrett Siebels scored 21 points and Brendon Johnson added 20 as Dominican University's comeback bid came up short in an 83-80 loss to Academy of Art on Thursday. The Penguins (10-16, 7-11 PacWest) trailed by 12 at halftime and pulled within one score in the final five seconds.

• College of Marin (11-17, 8-8 Bay Valley) outlasted Solano for a 112-102 overtime victory on Thursday night.

Women's basketball

Jenna Duley scored 18 points to lead the way as Dominican fell 79-71 against Academy of Art on Thursday. The Penguins (18-8, 11-7) led by two at the half but were outscored 20-12 in the third quarter. Keyonee Neal added 17 points and Alaiyah San Juan scored 10.

• Isobel Crosswhite scored 18 points and added 11 rebounds to pace three players in double-digit scoring for COM in a 81-59 loss to Solano on Thursday. Samantha Morris added 15 points for the Mariners (14-14, 8-6) while A'liyah Holmes scored 10.
