Redwood High baseball falls short in tourney championsh­ip

The Redwood High baseball team strung together three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning but the rally came up just short in a 4-3 loss to College Park in the championsh­ip game of the Service Champions Classic on Saturday.

College Park scored a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh for a 4-1 cushion. Miles Harrison hit an RBI single to pull the Giants (13-2) within 4-2 then Theo Trono reached on an error to make it 4-3 with one out. College Park got the final two outs via flyouts to win the tournament, which was hosted by Livermore High.

Leadoff hitter Matthew Knauer had two of Redwood's five hits.

San Marin surrendere­d four runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out its run in the Service Champions Classic. Tyler Keehn had an RBI to put the Mustangs (87) ahead 1-0 in the fourth and cruised on the mound through five innings before running into trouble in the sixth. Both teams were limited

to four hits.

Luke Martin and Carter Capobianco had run-scoring hits to get Marin Catholic off to a strong start en route to a 6-0 win against Branson on Saturday. Martin hit a two-run double then Capobianco drove him in with a single for a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Jayden Lee (two hits, three RBIs, two runs) added a three-run homer in the sixth inning for the final margin. Liam Smith allowed just one hit over six innings to earn the win for MC (9-8, 7-4 MCAL).

Cruz Wexler had three hits at the plate and allowed three hits on the mound as San Rafael rolled to an 11-1 win against Washington (San Francisco) at the Willie Stargell Tournament at Encinal High on Saturday. Wexler pitched six innings, allowing one earned run while striking out four. As a hitter, he droves in two runs. Noah Shapiro had two hits and drove in three runs. Dylan Thorpe, Lazio Clements and A.J. Mazurette had two hits apiece for San Rafael (4-9). The Bulldogs were coming off a nine-inning affair against Tam on Friday night that was suspended due to darkness with the score tied at 4-4. The game will be completed at a date to be determined.

College softball

Dominican University bounced back from a sweep Friday at the hands of Biola, taking the first game of Saturday's doublehead­er, 9-3.

Shelby Keltner pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits and three earned runs. Dominican grabbed the lead with two runs in the second and two more in the fourth before tacking on four runs on a grand slam by Kamaleinan­i Kaleikini in the bottom of the sixth.

Olivia Lee had three hits and two RBIs for the Penguins (18-19, 11-11 PacWest), who lost the second game 3-2.

Prep track

San Rafael resident Ellie McCuskey-Hay placed second in the invitation­al long jump and fifth in the invitation­al 100 meters at the Arcadia Invitation­al on Saturday.

McCuskey-Hay jumped 18 feet, 10.5 inches in the long jump and finished the 100 in 11.73 seconds. McCuskey-Hay also placed sixth in the open 200 in 24.57.

Boys tennis

Tyler Byrne and Julian Khetawat won singles matches on Friday, keeping Tam in the playoff hunt following a 4-3 win against San Marin. Milo Reyes and Alex Christfort won the Nos. 2 and 3 singles matches, respective­ly, for the Mustangs.

Tam is expected to play Marin Catholic after spring break needing a win to tie Archie Williams for fourth place.
