THE LAST OF THE FISH ASSASSINS

Great interview with Charles Perry (“Players,” June/July). I had the pleasure of meeting CP many years ago when he was an instructor during a session of Marlin University, and hearing his stories of fishing on the Great Barrier Reef really inspired me to want to make that trip one day. He explained that he was the last of the fish assassins, and that if you wanted to say you caught a grander black, you had to prove it by putting the fish on the scale. I’m glad that it’s changed these days to more of a release ethic, in Australia and elsewhere, but I realize that it’s what those guys did back then. I liked his thoughts on sonar too. He never was afraid to speak his mind about something.
