To tower or not to tower? These intricate lattices of aluminum pipe add expense and weight while amplifying the boat’s natural roll in a beam sea, not to mention adding countless hours of upkeep and maintenanc­e each season. Some will say that sport-fishing boats just don’t look right without one though, and it’s hard to argue that point. Aside from the captain fishing from that lofty perch, it’s incredibly handy to have a sharp-eyed spotter positioned high enough above the water to catch the first glimpse of a sneaky billfish in the spread: “Right rigger!”
