The Day One leader emerges victorious

● The 2021 Los Cabos Billfish Tournament faced an unpredictable, slow-moving weather system that developed into Hurricane Pamela, eventually causing the ports of Cabo San Lucas and Puerto San Jose, Mexico, to be closed on two of the scheduled fishing days. The tournament became a one-day shootout, with all prize categories up for grabs, including the cash purse of $826,450.

The team on Sneak Attack, a 65-foot American Custom Yacht, led by owner Shawn Guttersen out of Napa, California, with Capt. Vicente Bojorquez and angler Steven Perry, made the best of the situation when they boated a 554-pound black marlin on the first day, which held up to win first-place and largest-marlin jackpots, as well as a sweep of the dailies, for a total of $498,140. Not bad for a day’s work. The Hooray team, fishing on an 80-foot Viking and led by owner Eric Dunn and Capt. Pancho Bojorquez, boated the tournament’s only other qualifying marlin: a black that was caught by Dunn and weighed 343 pounds, worth $99,360 in prize money.

Karma, a 54-foot Sculley from Linn, Oregon, released two black marlin and one striped marlin, winning second-place team as well as first-place release and the daily release jackpots for $106,875. El Suertudo released a pair of blue marlin on Day One, placing third in the release division, earning $47,735.
