Act fast, and you can coun­ter­act the tough­est, most ter­ri­fy­ing spills—even a splash of red wine. The se­cret is to pre­treat them ASAP, while they’re still damp, then laun­der re­mov­able cov­ers ac­cord­ing to the care la­bel. Here’s how to lift away three com­mon of­fend­ers.

WINE OR INK Cover the area with kosher salt, pat­ting gen­tly with a damp white- cot­ton cloth, and let it sit for about 30 min­utes (the salt should change in color to match the stain); vac­uum and re­peat. Blot any re­main­ing stain with a cloth damp­ened with warm, soapy wa­ter.

OIL Cover the area with bak­ing soda, and let it sit un­til it ab­sorbs the oil; vac­uum and re­peat. Blot any resid­ual stain with rub­bing al­co­hol.
