Smith leads beautification of senior center
The Indian Head Senior Center, located at 100 Cornwallis Square in Indian Head, received some renovations last weekend spearheaded by town Councilman Curtis Smith.
Smith completed Phase 1 of the beautification process of the center by repainting the bathrooms and the walkway leading into the kitchen and replacing the floor tiling.
Smith was assisted by his son, Xavier Smith, and two workers from Elegant Flooring and Lighting in Upper Marlboro worked on tiling over the weekend.
“HeartCry Church was very instrumental in the beautification activities of the senior center,” Smith said.
When the center reopened Monday morning, they were in awe of the renovations and vibrance their senior center received.
“We are truly blessed to have received such renovations to our center,” said Barbara Joy, program assistant for the Indian Head Senior Center. “With Councilman Smith volunteering to renovate our center, we are so grateful that he took on this task. Our budget would not allow for what he has done for us and we at the senior center are truly grateful for the vibrance he has brought us.”
The center offers many daily activities such as bingo, line dancing classes, sing-alongs, bridge, ceramics, knitting, AFEP (Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program), tai chi, therapeutic massages, safety and nutrition lectures, watercolor painting, billiards and holiday celebrations.
The center serves approximately 45 to 50 seniors a day and at least 100 to 200 seniors for major events.
Smith said he plans to continue renovations for the center with Phase 2, in which he will replace the carpet in the lobby with hardwood flooring, repaint the panels in the foyer, replace the blinds and fix dents and cracks in the walls.
