Peavy leads Giants over Reds

-

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Giants pitcher Jake Peavy homered through the lowhovering mist for his first long ball in more than nine years, leading San Francisco past the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 on Wednesday night.

Peavy struck out eight in six-plus innings on the mound and connected for his third career home run in the fourth against reliever Collin Balester. It was Peavy’s first since July 26, 2006, at Dodger Stadium with the Padres.

That gave Giants pitchers nine home runs this season, the most since hitting 10 in 1934. The 1924 staff also had nine.

San Francisco remained 7 ⁄ games behind NL Westleading Los Angeles and 7 ⁄ back of the Cubs for the second wild card. White Sox 9, Athletics 4 CHICAGO – Mike Olt homered and Melky Cabrera had a two-run double as part of a six-run fourth inning to help the White Sox beat Oakland.

Oakland starter Cody Martin (2-5) gave up six runs and six hits in threeplus innings.

A’s call up Zito OAKLAND – The Oakland Athletics are bringing up former Cy Young Award winner Barry Zito.

The A’s announced Wednesday that they will purchase Zito’s contract from Triple-A Nashville. They cleared a roster spot by placing right-hander Jesse Chavez on the 60-day disabled list with a broken rib.

Zito returned to the A’s with a minor league contract this season and spent the entire year in Nashville, where he went 87 with a 3.46 ERA in 24 games.
