In what coach Glenn Mayol called the biggest win in program history, the Yuba College women’s basketball team went on the road to San Pablo on Thursday and picked up a huge 83-76 victory over Diablo Valley College in the opening round of the Contra Costa Classic.

“I don’t think anybody in the state gave us a chance to win this game. It was the biggest win in program history, and I’ll go down saying that,” Mayol said. “They were ranked in the top five in Northern California and I would guess in the top 10 in the state, so this is going to raise a lot of eyebrows. People are going to be shocked, except for us.”

Leading the way for the 49ers were sophomore guards Kylee Daniels and Taylor Galli, both of whom dropped in 19 points in the victory. Shanta Powers added 13 points, and Santana Ramsey and Alexis Zimmerman chipped in with nine each.

Yuba improved to 4-3 after knocking off a Vikings team that entered the game with a 7-1 record, and will look to continue its momentum into today’s second-round matchup against College of the Siskiyous at 6 p.m.

“It was a total team effort and everyone contributed,” Mayol added. “I’m a humble guy, but I’ve got a smile from ear to ear and it’s not going away.”
