ROUNDUP: Pierce to play for own tourney title; RV, Gridley girls fall

River Valley’s junior varsity team fell to Folsom, 60-48, in tournament play at Cosumnes Oaks High in Elk Grove. Micah Tomm had 13 points and Sahib Sharma scored 12 for the Falcons (1-1).

Whitney 62, Lindhurst 49 In Rocklin – Playing as a last-second addition for a team that dropped out, the Blazers put up a strong effort on short notice but fell to the host Wildcats at the Whitney Winter Classic.

Miles Pennington poured in a teamhigh 26 points, Jordon Burns had eight points and seven assists, and Roland Vaitautolu pulled down 14 rebounds for Lindhurst (0-1), which travels to Sacramento to face Mira Loma tonight.

Pierce 61, Middletown 40 In Arbuckle – Alex Ambriz led four players in double-digits with a game-high 17 points and the host Bears advanced to the championsh­ip game of the 49th annual Pierce Invitation­al with a lopsided win over the Mustangs.

Ben High added 16 points, Gabe Villa chipped in 13 and Angel Hernandez scored 11 for Pierce (2-0), which will play Dixon for the tourney title today at 7:30 p.m.

Dixon 54, Colusa 34 In Arbuckle – The hot-shooting RedHawks were quickly cooled off by the Rams’ defense in a loss at the Pierce Invitation­al.

Colusa coach Brian Davis said shots for his team “were just not falling in,” as Sam Moreno had seven points and Will Kalisuch finished with six.

The RedHawks (2-1) will play Middletown in the third-place game today at 6 p.m.

Live Oak 77, East Nicolaus 39 In Arbuckle – Ashvir Singh and Jazz Khan scored 15 points each to lead the Lions over the short-handed Spartans on the second day of the Pierce Invitation­al.

Steven Williams added 14 points for the Live Oak (2-1), which closes out tournament play today in the consolatio­n championsh­ip against Williams.

Connor Jens and Diego Barajas scored 10 points each for East Nicolaus (0-2), which will play Biggs in the seventh-place game at 1:30 p.m.

East Nicolaus’ junior varsity team lost to Middletown, 61-46. David Earhart scored 30 points to lead the Spartans (1-1).

Lassen 61, Gridley 60 In Durham – The Bulldogs and Grizzlies battled all game long, and the final 60 seconds saw the lead change hands before Lassen hit a last-second shot to earn the victory in the opening round of the Herb Jergentz Tournament.

Tyler Little scored 22 points and Brian Wilkerson added 15 for Gridley (0-2), which plays Butte View League rival Orland today at 4 p.m. Faith Christian 63, Stockton Christian 45 In Yuba City – The Lions broke open a close game in the fourth quarter to pick up a victory over the defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI champion Eagles in an opening-round game at the Faith Christian Holiday Classic.

Zach Rodriguez had 22 points and seven rebounds, Bennett Morrison added 16 points and six rebounds, and Justin Meyer finished with 11 points for Faith Christian (1-0), which will play New Life Christian today at 8 p.m.

New Life Christian 44, Esparto 31 In Yuba City – The Crusaders picked up their first win of the season with a victory over the Spartans at the Faith Christian Holiday Classic.

Ryan Treat scored a game-high 22 points and Colbey Ciro added 10 for New Life (1-1).

GIRLS BASKETBALL Argonaut 40, River Valley 38 In Sacramento – In a battle that come down to the final moments, the Mustangs got a rebound and put up a shot in the final seconds to hand the Falcons their first loss of the season in the opener at the Rob Jones Classic at Rosemont High.

Vanessa Gonzalez had 11 points and two steals, Gloria Leon had nine points, four assists and five steals, and Cailyn Francis finished with seven points and eight rebounds for River Valley (1-1), which will face Gridley today at 3:30 p.m.

Foothill-Sacramento 58, Gridley 39 In Sacramento – The Bulldogs are still searching for their first win of the season after dropping their opener in the Rob Jones Classic despite 16 points and 10 rebounds from Maddyson Tull.

Stephanie Cardenas also played well for Gridley (0-2), scoring 11 points and pulling down eight rebounds.

Colusa 47, Lindhurst 20 In Colusa – Abby Huskey scored 10 points, and Edith Moreno and Lexi Ramos added nine each to lift the host RedHawks past the Blazers in the opening round of the Jim Ernst Classic.

Colusa (2-0) will play Trinity in the second round today at 7:30 p.m.

Amaya Mitchiner scored eight for Lindhurst (0-2), which will take on Wheatland at 4:30 p.m.

The Blazers’ JV team defeated Colusa, 36-32. Karena Brito had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Danika Martin chipped in 12 points and two blocks for Lindhurst (2-0).

Bear River 64, Live Oak 46 In Live Oak – Leslie Fregoso scored a team-high 17 points but the Bruins were just too much for the host Lions as they handed Live Oak a loss in the second round of the Lois Langford Invitation­al at Ron Pritchard Gymnasium.

Ellie Miskin and Isabella Hernandez added eight points each for the Lions (2-1), who will take on Marysville in the thirdplace game today at 6 p.m.

Quincy 46, Marysville 34 In Live Oak – Elisa Canty-Abdallah continued her hot start to the season with 14 points, five rebounds and four steals, but the Indians dropped their second-round game at the Lois Langford Invitation­al.

Heather Harness had a double-double for Marysville (1-2) with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Biggs 53, Williams 13 In Biggs – Bailee Roles notched a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, and the host Wolverines opened the Mel McLaughlin Tournament with an easy win over the Yellowjack­ets.

Ciera Van Quick added eight points and seven steals, and Savannah Rogers had eight points as well for Biggs (1-1), which plays Chester in the second round today at 6 p.m.

Etna 48, East Nicolaus 27 In Biggs – The Spartans opened their season with a loss to the Lions in the first round of the Mel McLaughlin Tournament.

Kayley Almond scored six points, Tiara Ceasar had five points and six rebounds, Ashley Almond scored five points and Hannah O’Connor pulled down eight boards for East Nic (0-1), which plays Mercy today at noon.

Etna also beat the Spartans in the junior varsity game, 44-10. Natalie Butler scored eight points and Savhanna Angland had 10 rebounds in the loss. Stockton Christian 59, Faith Christian 11 In Yuba City – Rachel Garbutt and Brianna Brennan pulled down 10 rebounds each, but it wasn’t nearly enough for the Lions on the opening day of the Faith Christian Holiday Classic.

Faith (0-1) will take on New Life Christian in the second round of tournament play today at 3:30 p.m.

Esparto 36, New Life Christian 19 In Yuba City – The Crusaders struggled offensivel­y as the Spartans built up a lead they were not able to overcome in a loss at the Faith Christian Holiday Classic.

Haley Rogers had 11 points and Hailey Hruska pulled down 12 rebounds for New Life (1-1).

BOYS SOCCER Colusa 4, Sutter 3 In Sutter – Jonathan Muniz scored two goals, including the game-winner with just two minutes remaining, to propel the RedHawks to a victory over the Huskies in the season opener for both teams.

Christian Lomeli had a goal and an assist, Lucas Garin netted a goal and goalkeeper Sal Lara recorded six saves for Colusa (1-0).

Santos Martinez scored two goals, Austyn Bates had one, Jonathan Adams had a strong game on defense and Alan Cruz Lopez played well at midfield for Sutter (0-1), coach Gurtej Bhattal said.

Yuba City 4, Orland 2 In Yuba City – Eric Ramirez had a hat trick, scoring all three of his goals in the first half as the Honkers held off the Trojans for the victory at Honker Stadium.

Hector Cortez scored a goal and the trio of Pete Afato, Marco Mora and David Soto all finished with assists. The defense also posted a strong performanc­e against the Trojans, Honkers coach Erik Soli said.

Yuba City (2-0) will travel to Redding for two games today, against West Valley at 9 a.m. and versus Oroville at 1 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER Marysville 7, Highlands 0 In North Highlands – Anastacia Bancroft scored three goals and handed out an assist to power the Indians to a nonleague victory over the Scots.

Ellie Bell and Tayler Freeman chipped in with a goal and an assist each, Star Miller and Baylee Plumb netted goals, and Roxana Terriquez added an assist as well for Marysville (2-0-1), which travels to San Juan on Monday.

Wheatland 2, Live Oak 1 In Wheatland – The Pirates scored the game-winning goal with a minute left to play to hand the Lions a loss in their season opener.

Valerie Gaytan scored a goal off an assist from Kim Figueroa, and Janet Enriquez and Paloma Vasquez had strong games defensivel­y, Live Oak coach Mike Owen said.

The Lions (0-1) will host Yuba City today at 3:15 p.m.
