Camptonville Courier to celebrate 20 years
It takes a group of people to put together a monthly publication, but it takes a village to keep that publication running for decades, which is why the Camptonville Courier is celebrating its 20th anniversary on April 1.
Shirley DicKard, editor of the Camptonville Courier, said the event will start with brunch at 9 a.m. Around 10 a.m., Courier staff will walk attendees through a timeline of the biggest events that occurred in the community over the past 20 years, as told through the 240 issues that have been published.
“We will basically be honoring all the people that have been involved in the publication’s process, from the writers to the people that have made tax-deductible donations,” DicKard said.
DicKard said the Courier was started in response to a town hall meeting where local residents expressed interest in having a local publication that could give the community a voice. Since then, she said the publication has been able to selfsustain ever since, with the help of the small community.
“The Courier is an eclectic collection of whatever I get for the month, everything from typical small-town coverage to people that have something they want to say,” DicKard said. “It’s reflective of what the community really cares about.”
The event will be at the Camp- tonville Community Center – 15333 Cleveland Ave. – on April 1 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. For more information, call the publication at 288-3479 or email camptonvillecourier @gmail.com. Issues of the publication can be found at www.camptonville.com.
DicKard said the publication has come a long way since its start 20 years ago. She said she hopes to see it continue to grow over the next 20 years.
“I want to hear from young people more, what they’re thinking, what they’re concerned about, and continue to expand the perspectives of all walks of life so everyone has an opportunity to share their voice, all while keeping our brown-paperwrapper flavor,” DicKard said.
