Five students taken to hospital as a precaution after bus crash

CHP: Driver was going too fast for turn

Five students were taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons after a school bus went off the roadway Wednesday in the foothills, according to a California Highway Patrol report.

The accident was reported at 9:20 a.m. on Texas Hill Road east of Rices Texas Hill Road between Oregon House and Dobbins.

The bus was carrying 14 passengers (ages 6-9) to the nearby Yuba Environmental Science Charter Academy. Jose M. Patino was iden- tified as the bus driver.

Principal Linda Cohee said the nine students who weren’t taken to Rideout Memorial Hospital came to school.

“This is a small K-8 school community, and everyone worked together today and school went on,” Cohee said. “Thank goodness it had a positive ending.

“Dobbins/Oregon House firefighters, CalFire and the CHP were great,” she said.

Cohee said parents picked up their children from the accident scene before taking them to school and added that the children who were taken to the hospital were in good condition.

Patino was driving the bus too fast, which allowed the bus to leave the roadway on the far side of a sharp right turn, the report said.

“After leaving the roadway, the bus tilted onto its left side as it approached a steep embankment,” according to the release.

“Luckily, the bus was prevented from overturning due to significant amount of vegetation in the area.”

The report said a closed road due to a downed tree forced the bus to take the alternate route.

The CHP said drugs or alcohol were not factors in the collision, which is under investigation. Marysville office, 1530 Ellis Lake Drive Business hours: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
