American Rivera heads home for Tour of California

- By Dave Skretta Associated Press

American cyclist Coryn Rivera long ago established her credentials on home soil, winning so many national championships in so many disciplines that she sometimes lost track of the total. It stands at more than 70, by the way. But when she switched to Team Sunweb this season, and embarked on a campaign that will have her racing largely in Europe, Rivera was back to being a relative underdog. And that lasted, oh, about two weeks, when she captured the first of her two Women’s WorldTour victories at Trofeo Alfredo Binda.

Now, after adding a win at the prestigious Tour of Flanders, Rivera will be among the favorites when she returns home for the Tour of California starting Thursday in South Lake Tahoe. The 24year-old grew up in Southern California.

“With Coryn, we have a rider that likes an uphill finish and the first stage really suits her strengths,” Team Sunweb coach Hans Timmermans said. “For the final two stages we can expect a bunch sprint and while riding on home soil, Coryn is eager to perform here.”

Marysville 6, Lincoln 4 In Lincoln – The Indians built a 6-0 lead through 4 ⁄ innings, then withstood a Zebras rally which saw them with runners on first and third when the final out was recorded. Pitcher Taryn Dolan got that out to finish his completegame, seven-hit, eight-strikeout performance. Hunter Nakamura scored twice and was 3 for 4 with an RBI. Gary Cooper had a two-run double and Dolan had an RBI and one of Marysville’s seven hits.

The win came in the last of three non-league games this week for the Indians. They finished third in the Golden Empire League with a 14-4 record, behind Capital Christian (15-3) and Dixon (15-3). Cap- ital Christian wins the championship after beating Dixon in two of three meetings.

In the junior varisty game, Dom Crabtree hit a grand slam home run and Tanner Misquez was 2 for 4 with a three-run triple in Marysville’s 10-4 win over Lincoln. Will Townsend (2 for 4, double) contributed on offense, while Morgan Goss (five innings, four strikeouts) and Gino Beniticilo (two innings, two runs allowed) handled the pitching duties. Marysville finished 17-9 overall and was third in the GEL at 13-5 behind champion Dixon and runner-up Capital Christian.
