Gold Sox finish off sweep of Bears

- Appeal-Democrat

The brooms were out at Colusa Casino Stadium on Saturday night as the Marysville Gold Sox led from start to finish en route to a 9-2 victory over the Yuba City Bears to sweep the three-game series from their new rivals across the Feather River.

The Gold Sox wasted little time taking control of the game, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning and never looking back.

Former Yuba City High standout Devin Pettengill, who was making his first start of the summer for the Gold Sox, led off the game by reaching on an error and scored after a single and two walks, the last coming with the bases loaded.

Another error by the Bears allowed two more runs to score before Tom Fuller came through with an RBI sin- gle to make it 4-0 before Yuba City even had a chance to bat.

The Bears responded in the bottom of the first when Creed Smith hit a leadoff double and scored on a triple by Josh Winkler. Dominic Diana followed with an RBI groundout to cut the lead to 4-2, but that was all of the runs Yuba City would get on this night.

Jason Dicochea connected for a solo home run in the top of the third to up Marysville’s lead to 5-2, and the score remained the same all the way until the ninth when the Gold Sox rallied for four runs to dash any chance of a Bears’ comeback.

Three walks loaded the bases for Mitchell Tyse, who drove in a pair of runs by belting a double, Beau McClintock came through with an RBI single and Joey Mejia knocked in a run with a groundout to complete the rout.

Doug Nimura earned his first win of the summer for the Gold Sox by allowing two runs on five hits over five solid innings. He struck out five and walked one to up his record to 1-3. Noah Sills struck out three over three scoreless innings and Cruz Diddario added two more strikeouts in the ninth to close the door.

Mejia and McClintock recorded a pair of hits each, and Pettengill and Tyse both scored two runs for Marysville.

Winkler and Malcolm Boehm had two hits each and T.J. Dove had a double to lead the offense for Yuba City. Andrew Fuentes struck out nine over seven strong innings to take the loss. He allowed six hits, walked three and only one of the five runs he allowed was earned.

Both teams will have today off. The Gold Sox (6-11) will return to action on Monday at home against the Medford Rogues, while the Bears (5-13) will make the long trip to take on the Portland Pickles on Monday.
