Brewers claim Athletics’ veteran catcher off waivers

The first-place Milwaukee Brewers claimed catcher Stephen Vogt off waivers from Oakland on Sunday.

The Athletics designated the two-time All-Star for assignment on Thursday.

In 54 games this year, Vogt was batting .217 with 20 RBI and four home runs.

Vogt became expendable as the Athletics opted to give 26-year-old Bruce Maxwell a shot behind the plate. Maxwell is batting .355 in 12 games so far this season. Of the rookie’s 11 hits this season, only one is for extra bases.
