A rundown of local projects:
Of the local agencies, Linda County Water District has the most expensive project. The district’s groundwater sustainability project, which would build a new well to source groundwater, costs $12,272,000. The DWR grant will contribute $999,500.
“The well will give us reliability redundancy to system and allow excess capacity with growth in the community,” said Brian Davis, general manager of Linda County Water District. “We’re excited to get the community a more stable drinking water supply.”
Yuba County Water Agency is slated to receive $893,948 from DWR to fund a groundwater sustainability plan for the North Yuba Subbasin and South Yuba Subbasin. The project involves conducting studies on existing groundwater conditions and conducting surveys among groundwater users. The project cost totals $1,191,930.
“It would entail, basically, a combination of outreach to stakeholders, study of geology and groundwater subbasins and groundwater modeling to look at scenarios for the future,” said Scott Matyac, water resources manager for Yuba County Water Agency. “Yuba County is blessed with a plentiful groundwater supply, but we want to maintain it for the future.”
Sutter County Developmental Services will receive $956,814 for the Sutter Subbasin Groundwater Sustainability Plan Development – a project totaling $1,277,442. However, the department also submitted an alternative plan, to DWR detailing why the Sutter Subbasin is already groundwater sustainable, and needs no further action. If DWR agrees with Sutter County Developmental Services, funding will not be distributed for groundwater sustainability projects within the county.
“We’ll only receive funding if the alternative plan is not approved,” said Guadalupe Rivera, senior civil engineer for Sutter County Developmental Services. “Hoping the alternative gets approved and we continue to manage our subbasin as we have been. It would save quite a bit of effort developing the plan and costs associated with developing a groundwater sustainability plan.”
Colusa Groundwater Authority will receive $1 million to fund the Colusa Subbasin Groundwater Sustainability Plan Development. After the grant, the water agency would be short $497,400 to cover the project.
Representatives from Colusa Groundwater Authority were not available to provide further details on their respective groundwater projects.
