Sutter High wrestling wins D-II championsh­ip

After rolling to the Butte View League title last week, Sutter High’s wrestling team took home the Northern Section Division II championsh­ip with a dominant showing in Anderson on Saturday.

A total of seven Huskies finished first in their weight classes as Sutter went on to record 312 points as a team. Corning was second with 218½ points and Orland was third with 153.

Placing first with undefeated records for the Huskies were Brody Dollins (106 pounds), Jimmy Heryford (113), Jacob Johnson (120), Billy Thornton (126), Zac Hancock (145), Max Gipson (195) and Travis Tedder (220).

Tyler Reynolds (182) and Austin Barden (285) both finished second, Brady Thornton (132), Riley Lizardo (138), Baily Johnson (152) and Julian Westmorela­nd (160) each took third, and Ian Lang (170) was fifth to round out the placers for Sutter.

All 14 of the Huskies’ wrestlers will now advance to the Northern Section Masters, which will be held next Friday and Saturday at the Redding Civic Auditorium. The top two finishers in each weight class at that tournament will then move on to the CIF State Boys Wrestling Championsh­ips on March 2-3 at the Rabobank Arena in Bakersfiel­d. Locals qualify for SJS Masters In Yuba City – River Valley, Yuba City, Marysville and Lindhurst will send a contingent of wrestlers to next week’s Sacjoaquin Section Masters after strong showings at divisional tournament­s on Saturday.

At the Division III championsh­ip hosted by River Valley, the Falcons saw three of three of their wrestlers qualify for Masters by finishing in the top four in their respective weight classes. Leading the way for River Valley was Adan Nava (145), who finished second at the 21-team tournament.

Andres Nava (152) placed third and Jonathan Sanchez (160) took fourth to book their tickets to Masters as well for the Falcons.

Qualifying for Yuba City were freshman Keola Abreu (108) and Kirino Delafuente (134), both of whom finished second at the tournament. Freshman Marc Avila (115), and sophomores Chris Divas (184) and Robert Teal (222) both took fifth to round out the leaders for the Honkers.

Yuba City took sixth as a team, while River Valley was 11th with many of its wrestlers unable to compete due to injuries and illnesses.

At the Division V championsh­ip at Delhi, Lindhurst brothers Eric Ledesma (113) and Jayson Ledesma (120) both went 3-1 with three pins to finish in second place and earn a trip to Masters.

Seth Pyse (195) placed third and Joey Henry (138) took fourth to qualify for Marysville.

The Sac-joaquin Section Masters will be held next Friday and Saturday at the Stockton Arena. The top six placers from there will qualify for the CIF state championsh­ips.

Two girls headed to state In Stockton – River Valley senior Alexis Young and Yuba City junior Kylie Pierce punched their tickets to the CIF State Girls Wrestling Championsh­ips by posting top finishes at the Sac-joaquin Section Masters at Mcnair High.

Young, the defending state champion, finished first in dominant fashion by going 4-0 with three pins to win the 170-pound weight class and become the first Falcon wrestler – male or female – to win a section title. She improved her record to 26-1 on the season with her only loss coming by injury default in the regional tournament two weeks ago.

Pierce took fifth in the 123-pound weight class to become the first Honker girl to qualify for the CIF state championsh­ips, which will be held next Friday and Saturday at the Visalia Convention Center in Visalia.
