Yuba City takes twinbill to sweep River Valley in Mayor’s Series

- Appeal-democrat

The 12th annual Mayor’s Series came to a conclusion on Saturday afternoon as Yuba City and River Valley High’s baseball teams squared off for a rare doubleheader after seeing Wednesday’s and Friday’s games rained out.

Traditionally held at the end of the season instead of the opening round of Tri-county Conference play, this year’s series between the two crosstown rivals ended the same way as most of the previous ones – a sweep for the Honkers.

Yuba City opened the day with a 14-2 victory in five innings before beating the Falcons 11-0 in seven innings in the second game to take both ends of the twinbill. It also gave the Honkers a series sweep after an 11-0 win in Game 1 on Monday.

The two wins upped Yuba City’s record against River Valley to 33-4 all-time. It was the Honkers’ 11th Mayor’s Series win and the ninth time they pulled off a sweep. The only time the Falcons won the series came in 2016, when they took two of the three games.

The Honkers recorded only five hits in Saturday’s opener, but took advantage of 10 walks, three errors and two hit batsmen to score 14 runs and win by the mercy rule.

Brennan White went 2 for 2 and scored three times, Bryce Rogers drove in three runs, and Anthony Piegaro and Brad Madison both drove in two runs and scored twice in the victory. Piegaro also doubled, while Matt Clayton reached base in all four of his trips to the plate and scored three runs.

Logan Meyers earned the win on the hill, striking out three and allowing three hits and one earned run in a complete-game effort.

The Honkers led 5-2 before ending the game early by scoring nine runs in the top of the fifth inning.

The Yuba College baseball team saw its losing streak stretched to six straight games after mustering only three hits in a 9-2 Bay Valley Conference loss to Laney College on Saturday afternoon in Oakland.

Things started well for the 49ers when Gage Sorenson reached on an error and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Schnitzius in the top of the first to stake them to a quick 1-0 lead.

However, the Eagles struck for two runs in the bottom half of the first inning and scored three more times in the second to open up a 5-1 lead and never look back.

Laney added another three runs in the fifth and scored again in the seventh to complete the scoring.

Yuba’s only other run came in the top of the seventh, when Nick Luchetti was hit by a pitch and came around to score on an RBI single Marysville High product Brian Sullivan.

Sullivan recorded two of Yuba’s three hits, while Aidan Gums added a single for the other.

The 49ers (9-12, 2-0 BVC) will look to snap their losing skid and pick up their first conference win of the season when they host Laney on Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Colusa Casino Stadium in Marysville.

Rogers got the job done on the mound in the second game, striking out three and scattering three hits while tossing a complete-game shutout. He also helped himself out at the plate by going 2 for 3 with two walks and scored once.

Yuba City recorded 10 hits in the game, plating five runs in the fifth and four more in the fourth before Clayton connected for a two-run homer in the seventh.

Clayton finished the game with two hits, Madison went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, and Blake Baca was 2 for 5 and scored twice.

Yuba City coach Dave Rodriguez said it was a bittersweet afternoon for his team after many of his players attended a funeral for a classmate earlier in day.

The Honkers (5-2, 3-0 TCC) will take a break from their conference slate next week and will host Pleasant Grove on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.

No information from Saturday’s doubleheader was provided by the Falcons (1-6, 0-3), who will look to snap a six-game losing streak when they begin a TCC series against River City at home on Monday at 4:15 p.m.

Yuba City also won both of the junior varsity games by scores of 14-0 and 16-5 to sweep the season series from River Valley.

Luke Afato went 5 for 9 with two doubles and five RBIS over the two games to lead the way at the plate.

Drake Richardson finished the day 3 for 5, Andy Menendez was 3 for 6 with a double, Vinny Menendez went 3 for 6 and Ikea Garcia was 2 for 2 for Yuba City (3-6, 3-0). Rio Vista 8, Sutter 5 Sutter 2, Rio Vista 1 In Sutter – After seeing their tournament in Yreka rained out this week, the Huskies scheduled a Saturday doubleheader and came away with a split against the Rams at Arata Field.

Sutter led 5-4 in the opening game before Rio Vista scored three times in the top of the sixth inning to pull away for the win.

Cory Mcintyre led the way at the plate for the Huskies by going 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI, while Zach Yacavace and Todd Carr added two hits and smacked a double each. Carr knocked in a run and Chad Hopkins had an RBI as well in the loss.

The second game belonged to Sutter senior pitcher Zachary Mcdaniel, who struck out six while throwing a complete-game four-hitter. The only run Mcdaniel allowed was unearned.

The game was tied 1-1 before Zach Bryan singled and scored on a gamewinning RBI single by Mcintyre in the bottom of the sixth. The Huskies finished with only four hits of their own, with the other run coming on an error in the fourth inning. Yacavace and Carr both singled to account for the other hits.

The Huskies’ junior varsity team settled for a 8-8 tie against Inderkum.

Brandon Taddy went 2 for 2 with a double, RBI and two runs runs scored, and Scott Davis added a tworun single for Sutter (5-3-1).

Colusa 1, Hamilton 0 In Hamilton City – Freshman Drew Bradbury struck out six and allowed four hits over 6 / innings, and Raymond Frias came on to strike out the final batter of the game to finish off the shutout as the Redhawks edged the host Braves in the final day of the Hamilton Tournament.

Bradbury also singled twice to account for two of Colusa’s three hits, while John Boeger doubled and scored the lone run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Clayton Angus in the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Redhawks (5-2) travel to play Esparto in a nonleague game on Monday.
