Yuba City softball hammers Woodland to open TCC play

Yuba City High’s softball team opened its Tri-county Conference slate in impressive fashion on Tuesday, receiving plenty of offense and nearly flawless pitching to record an easy 16-0 road victory over Woodland.

Blake Craft struck out nine while tossing five perfect innings in the circle and Valey Witherspoon walked two and struck out one in the sixth to complete a nohitter in a game that was called after six innings of play due to the 10-run rule.

Taylor Birkholz led the way offensively for the Honkers by going 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIS, while Alexis Dorantes finished the day 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIS.

Monique Villavicencio added a 4-for-4 showing and knocked in a pair of runs, and Delaney Amarel connected for a three-run home run as Yuba City ended the game early by scoring five times in the fifth and seven times in the sixth.

The Honkers (7-2, 1-0 TCC) will continue conference play on Thursday at Inderkum, weather permitting.

Colusa 8, Oroville 7 In Oroville – The Redhawks put six runs on the board in the top of the first and added two more runs in the sixth to outlast the Tigers for a nonleague victory.

Oroville made things interesting late by scoring five times in the bottom of the seventh before Colusa finally closed things out.

Josie Garofalo keyed the offense once again for the Redhawks by hitting a two-run triple as part of her 2-for-2 day, and Jessica Hickel chipped in with a pair of doubles and two RBIS.

Yuba College’s baseball team is still searching for its first Bay Valley Conference victory of the season after suffering a 7-3 loss to the College of Marin on Tuesday afternoon at Colusa Casino Stadium in Marysville.

The Mariners took a 2-0 lead on an error by the 49ers in the top of the fourth and added three more runs in the fifth to up the margin to 5-0. Marin plated another run in the top of the eighth before Yuba finally got some offense going in the bottom half of the inning.

Andrew Schnitzius got the Niners on the board with a two-run single and Hayden Reyna chipped in with an RBI single of his own to trim the lead to 6-3 heading into the ninth. However, Marin got one of the runs back on an RBI double and Yuba didn’t score its final at-bat to come away with the loss in the opener of a scheduled three-game series.

Schnitzius finished 3 for 4 and Brian Sullivan went 2 for 4 to lead the way for the 49ers at the plate. Yuba’s pitchers walked 11 batters and saw five of them came around to score, and the defense committed three errors, which led to five unearned runs by Marin.

The 49ers (9-14, 0-4 BVC) will look to snap their eight-game losing streak when they take on the Mariners in Game 2 of the series on Thursday at Sonoma State.

Addie Taylor went a perfect 3-for-3 and struck out five from the circle to earn the win.

Colusa (5-0-1) is set to host division rival Durham today, weather permitting.

BASEBALL Marysville 12, Mesa Verde 1, 5 inn. In Marysville – The Indians kept their perfect record intact by cruising to an easy Golden Empire League victory over the Mavericks at Weldon Field.

Freshman Devon Conway had a stellar game on the mound for Marysville, giving up only a solo home run in the top of the first and nothing else the rest of the way. He finished with 10 strikeouts and no walks while firing a completegame one-hitter.

Job Stout went 2 for 3 with an RBI and scored twice, Ben Whitlock doubled and knocked in three runs, John Flores finished 2 for 3 with two RBIS and Justin Walsh added a double to lead the way offensively in the win.

The Indians (7-0, 4-0) are scheduled to play at Lindhurst today to close out their three-game GEL series that started Monday.

Yuba City 4, Pleasant Grove 1 In Yuba City – The Honkers executed all of the little things well and received solid pitching to pick up a nonleague victory over the Eagles at Winship Field.

Yuba City fell behind 1-0 early before Marc Snyder tied it up with an RBI double in the bottom of the second. Logan Meyers drove in the go-ahead run with a two-out single in the fifth, and the Honkers added two insurance runs in the sixth for some breathing room.

Anthony Piegaro scored the first run of the inning when he was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch, and Brad Madison all but put the game out of reach by belting a solo home run.

Jarin Mann allowed one run over the first two innings, Blake Baca pitched a scoreless third and fourth, and Piegaro struck out three and allowed two hits over the final three innings to earn the win.

It was the fifth straight win for the Honkers (6-2), who will take the rest of the week off before beginning play at the College Baseball Match Spring Break Tournament on Monday at home against Lincoln and Casa Roble. Wheatland 11, Live Oak 1, 5 inn. In Wheatland – The Pirates had their biggest offensive output of the season and snapped a threegame losing streak with a mercyrule win over the Lions.

Jordan Getz pitched a complete game to earn the win and went 2 for 2 with a double at the plate. He was also hit by a pitch and walked to reach base four times.

Collin Nyberg finished the day with three hits, and Conner Jacobsen and Conner Olson delivered RBI singles to help the cause for Wheatland (3-4), which is scheduled to host Winters on Thursday.

Laguna Creek 8, Sutter 2 In Sutter – The Huskies were limited to just four hits in a nonleague loss to the Cardinals from Elk Grove.

Austin Jones hit an RBI double, Doug Dewitt knocked in a run with a single, and Todd Carr and Zachary Mcdaniel both singled to provided the offense for Sutter.

The Huskies (6-3) are scheduled to travel to Winters for a matchup between two of the Northern Section’s top programs today if the weather holds up.

BOYS GOLF Yuba City 242, Rio Linda 315 In Linda – Christian Pineda shot a three-over-par 39 to help power the Honkers to a TCC win over the Knights at Peach Tree Golf & Country Club.

Thomas Allen added a 46, Ethan Oakes carded a 48, David Geitner recorded a 54 and Mason Chappell finished with a 55 to round out the scoring five for Yuba City.

River Valley wins by forfeit In Linda – The Falcons remained perfect on the year by picking up a forfeit win in their TCC match against Woodland at Peach Tree Golf & Country Club.

River Valley went on to record a team score of 201 behind the solid play of seniors Trey Davis and Riley Bell, both of whom finished their rounds by shooting 36s. Andrew Davidson carded a 39 and Guramrit Ghoman added a 41 for the Falcons (5-0, 3-0), who are scheduled to play Pioneer at Yolo Fliers Club in Woodland on Thursday.

Davis also had a strong showing competing individually at the first Junior Tour of Northern California tournament of the season in Stockton over the weekend. Davis shot a 66 in the first round on Saturday and posted a 79 on Sunday to finish first out of 50 golfers in the championship flight.

Bell also played well and finished in a tie for sixth at the tournament.

BOYS TENNIS Live Oak 8, Wheatland 1 In Wheatland – The Lions won five of the six contested matches and won another three by forfeit to pick up a Butte View League victory over the Pirates for their first win of the season.

Winning in singles play for Live Oak were Gurman Singh (6-1, 7-6), David Topete (6-0, 6-0) and Ian Hunter (6-0, 6-0). Singh also teamed with Danziqu Suarez for an 8-4 win in doubles, while Topete and Hunter won their doubles match 8-0.

Live Oak (1-2, 1-1) continues BVL action on Thursday at home against Orland.

River Valley 8, Yuba City 1 In Yuba City – The Falcons won five of six singles matches and swept all three in doubles to earn the TCC victory over the host Honkers.

Winning singles matches for River Valley were Jimmy Sallaberry (6-1, 6-0), Sameer Gupta (6-1, 6-0), Thomas Tonthat (6-0, 6-0), Christian Ramirez (6-2, 6-1) and Ethan Thiara (3-6, 6-4, 10-4).

In doubles play, the Falcons received a 6-1, 3-6, 10-8 win from the team of Eddie Perez and Harsimar Kullar, a 6-4, 6-3 victory from the tandem of Emmanual Ramirez and Victor Camacho, and a 6-0, 6-2 win from the duo of Jonathan Goode and Peter Torres.

River Valley (5-3, 3-1) is scheduled to host River City on Monday.

Diego Murillo rallied back for a 0-6, 6-4, 10-8 win to account for Yuba City’s lone victory.
