Looking good in red

Sherman dazzles at introductory news conference

- By Cam Inman San Jose Mercury News

SANTA CLARA – Richard Sherman proved Tuesday he can still command a room with poignant words. His bright, red suit added pizzazz to that.

Most pertinent to his and the 49ers upcoming season is what footwear complemented his wardrobe: black loafers, rather than an orthopedic boot or other support for his surgically repaired lower legs.

“I’ll be back on the field May, June,” Sherman vowed. “I was back on the treadmill before I had to get the little scope (to remove bone spur from his left heel) and I look forward to renewing that timeline the next couple weeks.”

Here are the top things Sherman said at Levi’s Stadium, in a follow-up to his March 12 conference call with reporters upon signing his three-year, incentiveladen deal:

1. Red alert. Sherman, after seven seasons as the Seattle Seahawks’ chief tormentor of the 49ers, explained what lured him to the 49ers’ red and gold. “It’s John and it’s Kyle,” Sherman said of general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan. “They brought stability to this organization. They brought fun, they brought belief, they brought faith. The players believe they can win. The players believe in the staff.”

No, there was no mention of former 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, who Sherman played for at Stanford and somewhat feuded with during the 49ers-seahawks rivalrly from 2011-14.

Sherman went on to praise Shanahan’s offensive ingenuity, which he’ll now only have to match up against on the practice field. He hopes to get on the field in late May or June following surgeries to repair his Achilles in November and remove a bone spur from his left heel last month. New San Francisco 49ers corner Richard Sherman said he will plans on being back on the field in May or June after undergoing two sergeries.
