Gridley baseball edges Sutter in opener of key BVL series

Frank Leyva drove in Jace Villapania with a two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to propel Gridley High’s baseball team to a 2-1 victory over Sutter on Tuesday in the opener of a key two-game series that will decide the Butte View League championsh­ip.

Both teams entered the day unbeaten in BVL play, and Gridley’s win guarantees the Bulldogs at least a share of the league title. The two teams meet again on Thursday in Sutter, where a win by the Huskies would mean the teams will split the BVL crown.

Kellen Brothers turned in a stellar effort on the mound to earn the win for Gridley, pitching all eight innings and striking out eight while allowing five hits.

The Bulldogs’ other run came in the third when Robert Peters hit a ground-rule double and was followed by an RBI double by Triston Platter. Leyva finished the game 2 for 4 to go along with his game-winning hit, and Ty Cota was 2 for 4 with a double for Gridley (22-3-1, 9-0 BVL).

Dante Caracciola struck out nine and allowed one earned run on four hits over 61/3 innings before reaching his pitch limit for Sutter.

The Huskies’ run come in the top of the fourth, when Todd Carr singled and later came in to score on an RBI single by Kody Johnson. Zach Bryan and Austin Dorman added a double each for Sutter (20-6-1, 8-1).

In the junior varsity game, James Tapia struck out six over five innings to lead Sutter to a six-inning 11-1 victory. Alec Bell went 3 for 4 with two RBIS, Eli Carlos was 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIS, and Brandon Taddy added a pair of hits for the Huskies (25-4-1, 9-0).

Colusa 13, Live Oak 6 In Live Oak – Drew Bradbury continued his strong freshman season by going 2 for 4 with four RBIS to lead the Redhawks to a Sacramento Valley League victory over the Lions.

Cody Free went 2 for 3 with two RBIS and two runs scored, and Christian Lyss was 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIS to help Colusa to its 20th win of the season. Leo Guzman allowed five runs and struck out three over 41/3 innings, and Blake Steidlmaye­r struck out three over 22/3 scoreless innings to close it out.

The Redhawks (20-9, 5-2) host University Prep in a nonleague game today.

Orland 8, Wheatland 2 In Wheatland – The Pirates played everyone on the roster while honoring their seniors, but they came up on the short end in a BVL loss to the Trojans.

Logan Tapp went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for Wheatland (7-13, 1-8), which travels to Orland for the league finale on Thursday.

SOFTBALL Marysville 8, Lindhurst 3 In Olivehurst – Veda Smith went 3 for 4 with a double and Jose Rapp finished 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIS to power the Indians past the Blazers in a battle for first place in the Golden Empire Leage.

Madison Powell was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, Hannah Clavelle and Hallie Roper both went 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Rebekka Montgomery chipped in with a double for Marysville, which pounded out 14 hits to avenge a 3-2 loss to Lindhurst on April 20.

Birdie Galaviz struck out two and allowed five hits in the circle to earn the win and put the Indians a half-game in front of West Campus atop the GEL standings.

The Indians (12-4, 8-2) host Colusa in a nonleague game today, while the Blazers (13-10, 7-3) continue GEL action on Thursday at home against Natomas. Yuba City 16, River Valley 4, 6 inn.

In Yuba City – The Honkers remained in second place in the Tri-county Conference with a victory over the rival Falcons.

Blake Craft pitched a perfect first, second and sixth inning, and freshman Maggie Penning allowed two earned runs from the third through the fourth for Yuba City.

Offensive stats from the win were unavailabl­e for the Honkers (16-7, 8-3), who host Inderkum today in their regular-season finale.

Caylee-mae Williams hit a three-run homer, Jersey Lee went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI, and Akaisha Lewis was 3 for 3 with a run scored for River Valley.

The Falcons (3-18, 1-10) close out their season on Thursday at River City.

In the junior varsity game, Bethany Baca went 4 for 4 with a home run, two doubles, six RBIS and five runs scored to lead the Honkers to a 16-2 victory. Baca also earned the win in the circle by striking out seven and throwing a three-hitter.

Monica Mitchell finished a perfect 5-for-5 with a home run, double and four RBIS, Sydnee Chappell hit a three-run homer and Grace Lee scored four times for Yuba City (19-1, 8-1).

Sutter 16, Gridley 0, 5 inn. In Gridley – Hailey Peterson went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIS at the plate, and she struck out 10 while throwing a one-hit shutout in the circle as the BVL champion Huskies rolled the Bulldogs to remain perfect in league play.

Reagan Ford finished 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIS, Juliana Capaul was 3 for 5 with three RBIS and Sam Anderson smacked a double to help the cause for Sutter (21-1, 9-0), which plays at Gridley on Thursday in the BVL finale for both teams.

In the junior varsity game, Sydney Harper went 3 for 4 with two doubles and five RBIS, and struck out nine to earn the win as Sutter clinched the BVL title with a 13-5 victory. Paige Thompson went 2 for 2 with three runs scored and Lexi Slade was 2 for 4 and scored twice for the Huskies (9-8, 8-1). Wheatland 20, Orland 5, 5 inn. In Wheatland – Senior Krissy Staas went 3 for 4 with four RBIS and three runs scored in her final regular-season home game as the streaking Pirates blew past the Trojans for an easy BVL victory.

Hailey Blankenshi­p and Ryleigh Webb both finished 3 for 3 with Blankenshi­p knocking in three runs and Webb knocking in two, and Tori Allison was 2 for 2 with a double and five RBIS to aid the offensive barrage for Wheatland.

The Pirates (16-10-1, 4-5) conclude BVL play on Thursday at Orland.

Riley Grigsby finished 3 for 4 and Emma Gaytan went 2 for 2 with an RBI for East Nicolaus (27-2, 7-0), which concludes MVL play with a doublehead­er at Hamilton City on Thursday.

TRACK & FIELD Indian boys take 1st again In Dixon – Marysville’s varsity boys team finished undefeated in the GEL this year by taking first at a make-up meet on Monday.

Tim Spence won both the shot put 45 feet, 4 inches) and the discus (146-6), Jose Ramirez placed first in the 400 (55.09 seconds) and was third in the high jump (5-8), and Cameron Dillon finished first in the 3,200 (11:46.92) for the Indians.

Taking second were Jose Aceves in both in the shot put (39-11) and the discus (118-0), Eugene Barajas in the 110 hurdles (17.83), Colton Schilperoo­rt in the 300 hurdles (43.60) and Ethan Maycroft in the pole vault (12-6).

Also taking second was the 4x400 relay team of Alijiah Bryant-johnson, Joey Henry, Schilperoo­rt and Jose Ramirez, which timed in at 4:02.20.

Third-place finishes for Marysville went to Barajas in the 300 hurdles (47.15), Nikalaus Bennett in the 110 hurdles (18.55) and Gavin Battista in the pole vault (11-0).

The Indians’ varsity girls team finished third overall and was led by Aubrey Mcbride, who won both the 1,600 (6:15.10) and the 3,200 (14:02.14) at the meet.

Brianna Berard finished second in the 100 hurdles (17.58) and third in the 300 hurdles (51.88), Star Miller took second in the pole vault (6-0) and third in the 100 hurdles (18.11), Amanda Angel was second in the 3,200 (14:42.39) and Sarah Putney placed third in the 1,600 (6:27.23).

Also taking third was the 4x400 relay team of Zoe Rosales, Jayda Liabraaten, Ami Kofuma-henry, and Ellie Bell, which clocked a time of 5:13.84.

Marysville’s frosh-soph boys team finished fourth. Felix Santiago placed second in the 800 (2:27.24) and third in the 1,600 (5:40.18), and Sam Teesdale was second in the 3,200 (12:42.24). Placing third were Lonnie Williams in the 400 (58.54) and Alex Scheive in the 300 hurdles (59.59).

Both Indians’ relay teams took third. The 4x100 relay team of Jaron Finley, Hugo Espinosa, Jose Antonio Ramirez-corona and Williams finished in 52.02, and the 4x400 relay team of Finley, Santiago, Ramirezcor­ona and Williams finished in 4:16.69.

Up next for Marysville is the Nevada Union Invitation­al on Friday.

Falcons compete at invite In Oroville – River Valley sent a group of athletes to the 25-team Norm Mackenzie Invitation­al at Harrison Stadium on Saturday.

The Falcons’ varsity boys team was led by Saahil Sandhar, who took home first place in both the 110 hurdles (17.43) and the 300 hurdles (44.13), and Pavandeep Chima, who was second in the pole vault (8-0). Joseph Miguel was also third in the shot put (41-10½) and Aidan Jukes was fifth in the 800 (2:07.10).

Taking seventh for River Valley was Amit Singh in the discus (100-0¼), Joshua Barriga in the shot put (38-2) and Bryce Dahlen in the 100 (12.62), while Abhayjot Johal finished ninth in the 800 (2:17.09).

The top performer for RV’S girls team was Abigail Titus, who placed third in the discus (84-0) and 10th in the shot put (25-0). Harpreet Kaur took seventh in the 400 (68.66) and Anabel Oseguera was 13th in the discus (64-2½).
