Sutter County races rake in $300K
Sheriff’s contest is pulling in the most contributions
Editor’s Note: This is the second of two reports concerning local campaign finances. A report on Yuba County candidate finances was published yesterday.
There could be some money thrown around in the run-up to the Sutter County elections. Amongst positions up for election where there are at least two candidates, nearly $300,000 in contributions have been reported up through the latest reporting deadline.
The sheriff’s race so far is pulling in the most in contributions, at more than $126,000 reported.
Candidates were required to submit their first round of financial statements by April 26. The documents covered the time period between Jan. 1 and April 21. The next round of required financial statements are due May 24.

Sutter County Sheriff
Candidates running for the Sutter County Sheriff’s position include Jeff
Pierce, 61, currently undersheriff; Dennis Hauck, 48, a Yuba City police sergeant; and Brandon Barnes, 45, the Yuba County Jail commander.
■ Pierce reported $36,840 in total contributions through April 21, and total expenditures of $39,194.
Notable contributions include: $500 from Northwest Freightway of Yuba City; $500 from Hoppin Family Farms; $525 from retiring incumbent J. Paul Parker; $700 from Mary Woods; $1,000 from Jay Grassell; $500 from Frederick Young; $1,000 from Alpha Intelligence; $2,000 from Moe’s Crop Dusting; $1,000 from J. Paul Parker; $3,000 from Sarb Thiara Jr.; $500 from Surjit Gill; $1,000 from Alfred Montna; $1,000 from Sutter Yuba Association of Realtors; $500 from Carl Pratt; $500 from Rai Ranches.
Through April 21, Pierce paid $16,000 to Tabcommunications in Fair Oaks for various consulting and paraphernalia.

According to the Fair Political Practices Commission, “if an individual donates his or her personal or professional services to a campaign (including a volunteer’s travel expenses), no contribution has been made or received as long as there is no understanding of reimbursement.”
■ Barnes reported $60,646 in total contributions and $29,328 in total expenditures. He loaned himself $2,000 this period.

Candidates running for the Sutter County superintendent of schools include Bal Dhillon, 54, the incumbent; Tom Reusser, 47, principal of Mckenney Intermediate School in Marysville; and Joe Hendrix, 53, and Joe Hendrix, 53, superintendent/ principal of Nuestro Elementary School District.
■ Dhillon reported $30,449 in total contributions and $31,602 in total expenditures.

Candidates for Sutter County District 3 supervisor include: Mike Ziegenmeyer, 37, vice president of sales for Sweco and general manager for Five Star Equipment Rentals; Paul Basi, 50, who owns and operates a professional staffing firm; and Bert Manuel, 50, a rice and walnut farmer.
■ Ziegenmeyer did not have financial paperwork turned in as of Monday afternoon.
■ Basi reported $12,893 in total contributions through April 21 and $32,634 in total expenditures.
