Yuba College students gather, swap ideas at inaugural Inter-club BBQ
It was all about grub and clubs at Yuba College on Tuesday in Marysville.
The inaugural Inter-club BBQ saw 22 of the college’s clubs come together to share what they have to offer – along with a BBQ lunch for the estimated 400 students who attended.
Student Sarah Diadiw purchased a few plants from the Green Futures club at the event and asked for more after she heard there were more available.
“I’d rather support the college greenhouse than someone else’s,” Diadiw said. “I want to buy all the plants – all of them.”
Shaun Presley is the president of Green Futures club and said he resurrected the club in 2015 and it’s grown since then.
“I revived it in 2015 and we started with two boxes (raised beds) and now we have 17 boxes and a greenhouse,” he said. “We’re growing food to donate to the community to help feed people in need.”
Associated Students of Yuba College (ASYC) is the official organization which controls student affairs and the Inter-club is a body consisting of all clubs at Yuba College and Sutter County Center.
“Normally, ASYC hosts club days throughout the year, but this year the inter-club council decided to take on an inclusive, participatory concept to build membership of all clubs and to show the students of Yuba College and Sutter County Center that there are lots for students to get involved in,” said Teresa Aronson, with Yuba College. “Many of our clubs are very active, for example the Psychology Club has raised thousands of dollars to install a mural at the Sutter County Center.”
Aronson said the clubs provide an extra level of enrichment to students.
“Clubs and organizations cater to and meet the academic, social, and political needs of a wide variety of students; they provide participation in extracurricular activities both on- and off-campus,” she said. “These clubs consist of everything from Veterinary Technology, Green Futures, Literary Arts and much more.”
