GREAT WEST LEAGUE Rogues strike early to topple Gold Sox

Medford opens up 9-1 lead en route to victory

- Appeal-democrat

After winning Friday night’s home opener in thrilling fashion with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth, the Yuba-sutter Gold Sox returned to Colusa Casino Stadium in Marysville looking to string together two consecutive wins for the first time this season.

An announced crowd of 2,401 turned out to watch the game and take in the first of five firework shows of the summer that followed, but unfortunately, the Gold Sox offense didn’t provide enough fireworks until the game was well out of reach.

The visiting Medford Rogues proved to be rude guests by scoring four times in the top of the second inning and held the lead until the very end to hand Yuba-sutter a 9-6 loss on Saturday night.

Former Yuba College standout Darrel Doll knocked in Elijah Smith with an RBI single in the third to make the score 4-1, but that was as close as the Gold Sox would get until the ninth as the Rogues struck for five runs from the fourth through the sixth to open up a 9-1 lead.

Billy Moreland hit an RBI double and Sterling Spurling drove in a run with a single during a two-run seventh, and Yuba-sutter scored two unearned runs in the eighth and another in the ninth to make the final score 9-6.

The Gold Sox finished with six hits after recording five the night before. Along with Moreland’s run-scoring double, and Doll and Spurling’s RBI singles, Tyler Stewart, Jacob Terao and Friday night’s hero Nick Ultsch recorded the other hits.

Terao and Zachary Promes both knocked in runs, and Smith and Ultsch scored twice.

Marysville High graduate Matthew Chiono entered the game in the fifth inning and went on to earn the win for Medford, striking out four and allowing one hit over 12/3 scoreless innings in the return to his hometown.

The Gold Sox (1-3) and Rogues (3-2) will conclude their three-game series with the rubbermatch today at 7:05 p.m.
