Plumas Lake’s Garza shines at two national tournaments
Jace Garza, 17, of Plumas Lake, turned in a pair of strong showings while competing at the AIM Grand National Youth Trapshooting Championships in Sparta, Illinois, and the SCTP American Team National Championships in Marengo, Ohio, last month.
The highlight of the AIM tournament for Garza came during the two-day singles championship. He was one of only five shooters out of 1,403 to break a perfect 200 of 200 targets. Then, after two shoot-offs, Garza was named 2018 AIM Grand National Singles Championship Junior Runner-up.
Garza was the only competior to represent California at the SCTP championships in Ohio, where the weather made it a challenge for all of the shooters.
Some days the weather was sunny and warm, while other days it was windy with heavy downpours.
In the 200 singles championship, Garza shot 198 of 200 targets to finish an impressive 25th out of 1,904 shooters. In doubles, he broke 190 of 200 targets to take 12th overall out of 432 shooters.
In the handicap championship, Garza shot 185 of 200 targets and finished 19th out of 357 competitors.
Afterward, Garza said he was pleased with his overall performance while competing against some of the best shooters in the United States.
“Making the podium at this level of competition was a huge accomplishment,” Garza said.
