Yuba City’s Brock Stassi is back with a major league organization after signing a minorleague contract with the San Francisco Giants on Friday night.

Stassi was packing up his things to join a professional team in Mexico City when he received a phone call from his agent informing him that the Giants wanted to sign him. He quickly jumped at the opportunity, and will join the Triple-a Sacramento River Cats this weekend.

The 29-year-old Stassi was released by the Minnesota Twins at the end of May after playing 32 games at Triple-a Rochester. He latched on in Connecticut by signing with the New Britain Bees of the independent Atlantic League, where put up big numbers by batting .361 with five home runs, four triples, 11 doubles and 36 RBIS in only 40 games to catch the eye of the Giants.

Brandon Belt started at first base for the River Cats in Saturday night’s game against El Paso as he began his rehab assignment for a bruised knee that has kept him out since July 26. Stassi is expected add depth at the position with a chance to return to the majors if he continues to swing a hot bat.

Last year, Stassi made the opening day roster Coming home
