Yuba County budget workshops planned for today, Wednesday

Yuba County department heads have one more opportunity to go before the Board of Supervisors to discuss plans for the year ahead and to finalize numbers for the current budget during a series of workshops scheduled for today and Wednesday.

Administrator Robert Bendorf said the budget workshops are conducted annually.

“(The workshop) provides an opportunity for each department to meet with the (supervisors) and discuss with them their department’s performance, opportunities and challenges,” Bendorf said. “Also discussed are new programs, mandates, metrics, etc.”

Supervisors approved a tentative budget for the current fiscal year (FY 2018-19) before the July 1 deadline.

Actuals for each department are rarely available by the deadline, so the county schedules workshops in August to reconvene and figure out how much was spent the year before and how much is available for the year ahead.

“These provide a chance to finalize the numbers from the last fiscal year and to find our starting point for the new year.

This helps us look at those finalized numbers,” said Russ Brown, public information officer for the county.

Today’s workshop will start at 1 p.m. and run throughout the rest of the day before picking up where it left off on Wednesday.

Bendorf said the county will likely finalize its FY 2018-19 budget at the Sept. 11 board meeting.
